Up to now, only the Asia-Pacific Gateway (APG) internet cable that connects Vietnam with the rest of Asia is still experiencing errors. The APG, with 10,400 km of cable under the Pacific Ocean, is the cable with the largest bandwidth connecting to Vietnam. It provides a maximum bandwidth of 54 terabytes per second and opened in 2016. In late December 2022 and mid-January this year, the cable had a problem with its connection to Hong Kong and another cable 151 km offshore. The two errors affected the entire line. The errors on APG route are expected to be fixed in June. With the completed repair and restoration of normal operation by four undersea cable routes - IA, SMW3, AAE-1 and AAG, the quality of Vietnam's internet services has improved as there are more connection options, with better latency. Telecom operators will be more flexible in navigating data traffic, ensuring service quality and enhancing the experience for internet customers. … [Read more...] about Internet speeds up as four of five undersea cables repaired
Musings from a Filipino grandfather
It is another warm summer morning in the city and I am listening to nostalgic, sentimental songs that melt the heart. It is time for me to write my weekly column, a few days ahead of its Friday posting. I need gentle and love-filled music to soothe my disturbed spirit. My attention has been so riveted on the grave concerns of most Filipino families who are poor and/or afraid-to-be-poor-again. Poverty now includes the emerging learning poverty. There is disinformation, as massive as it is funded. There springs the thought of what will happen beyond my lifetime, what I and my generation will leave behind for the generations after us. I cannot help but recall the legacy my parents were building from the time I was born until they, too, reunited with their ancestors. I remember the stories of a world war that I was fortunate to not have experienced. Those stories were full of extreme difficulty for those actively resisting Japanese occupation. They were told with tears for those who … [Read more...] about Musings from a Filipino grandfather
Statesman or politician?
Editorial Board (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta ● Fri, June 2 2023 It’s only natural for an outgoing president to have a preference of successor for the sake of policy continuity, but problems arise if he or she tries to define the course of the election, which should run in a democratic manner according to the Constitution. In the case of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, his apparent support for, if not endorsement of, several presumptive presidential nominees such as Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and Prabowo Subianto of the Gerindra Party should not be a big deal. Jokowi knows and has worked with both figures and has a sense of whether they will preserve his legacy and complete what he does not accomplish by the time he leaves office in October of next year. Jokowi may also suggest running mates who he thinks best suit the presidential hopefuls and can help them win the election. On one occasion, the … [Read more...] about Statesman or politician?
