Eight officials in HCM City meter scandal to face trial (24-08-2005) HCM CITY — Eight people will stand trial for the HCM City electricity meter scam in which malfunctioning meters were palmed off on unwilling consumers at exorbitant rates. The Ministry of Public Security’s investigation office has decided to prosecute six top officials from the HCM City Electricity Company (HEC) and two from the Singapore-based Linkton Company. The eight include Le Van Hoanh, former HEC deputy director, Le Van Tinh, head of the HEC’s material supply office, Le Ngo Huu Thien Tam, head of HEC’s external co-operation office, Thieu Tuc, deputy head of the Electricity Experiment Centre, Huynh Ngoc Thanh, deputy head of HEC’s business office, Nguyen Van Hiep, head of HEC’s technical office, Tran Cong Dien, former director of Linkton Vina, and Nguyen Trong Hieu, head of Linkton Vina’s business office. The scam began in the middle of last year when 285,000 electronic meters were installed at the houses of consumers, who, to add insult to injury, were also forced to pay a huge price for them.
