Residents of the Sound View Houses are fighting a proposal by the city Housing Authority to take away their parking lot to build a string of private apartments and townhouses. But officials say critics are jumping the gun on the preliminary plan, which they say will give residents first crack at the new housing. At a Nov. 28 Community Board 9 forum, officials from the HA and the city Department of Housing Preservation and Development faced heated opposition to the plan to have a private developer build rentals and townhouses on a parking lot at the Sound View Houses – which would eliminate about 124 parking spaces. Tenants and community leaders shouted down the plan. Housing Authority officials said the lot under consideration in the preliminary plan is only 25% utilized, and that parking will be provided for the new units. “We are committed to working with residents to identify a convenient location for replacement parking,” said agency spokesman Howard Marder. The HA wants to build 200 rental units and 18 two-family townhouses on the parking lot at 1711 Lacombe Ave. and the recently opened barbecue area.
