How we lost our factories to China Toms River, N.J.: Voicers Kanu Shukla and Bob Geoghegan lament the fact that Boy Scout knives are made in China and suggest that if Americans would pay a bit more to have them made here, more U.S. citizens would be employed. The sad fact is that most manufacturing here in the United States has been regulated nearly into oblivion. Concerns about the environment have taken the forefront. That, along with hidden fees on local, state and federal levels have driven manufacturing overseas. The final nail in the coffin is the cost of product liability insurance to protect from ludicrous lawsuits. If nothing is done, soon no one will be able to afford any knife made anywhere, no matter how cheap. I know: I closed our family-run manufacturing business several years ago, and am now working in a tackle store selling foreign goods. A strong global economy can be maintained only through a strong U.S. economy. When will politicians realize that?
