Rise of digital transactions spells bad news for ATMs
The pace of ATM additions has seen a steep fall after peaking in 2013. Central banks data show that while new ATM installations grew by 25.4% in 2008-09 and 37.8% in 2009-10, India added only 9% new ATMs in the financial year ended March 2016. This growth rate more than halved at the end of March 2017 when new ATM installations grew only 4.2%. “The business case for significant ATM expansion has diminished after the government's push towards cashless transactions,“ said a private sector banker. “The way digital acceptance is growing, I don't see a huge demand for ATMs going forward.“ Since the government announced the demonetisation exercise on November 8 last year, digital transactions have trebled and quadrupled in volume and value across various modes from wallets to cards and interbank transfers from a year earlier.
