AMD is bringing Smart Access Memory’s frame rate boosts to Ryzen 3000 processors
The bar has just been lowered (in a good way!) for Resizable BAR, the PCI-Express graphics feature that lets CPUs directly access a GPU’s onboard memory to improve gaming frame rates. That’s because AMD just announced it’s bringing the tech to its last-gen Ryzen 3000 series processors, not just the new Ryzen 5000 chips that initially launched with the feature. AMD originally debuted the feature as “AMD Smart Access Memory,” and you specifically needed an AMD Ryzen 5000 CPU and an AMD Radeon RX 6000 graphics card to make it work. That wasn’t a particularly easy sell, considering both have been incredibly hard to find at retail since they first debuted. But it was an easy sell for Nvidia and Intel, which announced in January that they’d be adopting Resizable BAR with initial support for Nvidia’s RTX 3000-series laptop GPUs, and later rolling out to RTX 3000-series desktops when paired with both AMD and a selection of both 11th Gen and 10th Gen Intel CPUs. Nvidia just launched … [Read more...] about AMD is bringing Smart Access Memory’s frame rate boosts to Ryzen 3000 processors
Biostar Injects Some Juice Into AMD’s Radeon RX 6700 XT
Evidently, not all reference Radeon RX 6700 XT graphics cards will arrive with the same clock speeds — Biostar (via VideoCardz ) has listed a reference design that flaunts a small factory overclock. Biostar refers to the graphics card as "VA67T6TEL9 Ver. RX6700XT M," although it's uncertain if that's the actual model name or the part number. The manufacturer used a render of AMD's reference Radeon RX 6700 XT, but the packaging itself has the "Extreme Gaming" label. The last bit may allude to the fact that Biostar's version is clocked higher than the usual reference edition. GeForce RTX 3070 , which starts at $499. With the graphics card shortage still transpiring, it might not be a battle of who is the fastest, but rather which card is readily available for purchase. AMD has promised to have substantially more Radeon RX 6700 XT stock at launch, so let's hope the chipmaker delivers. … [Read more...] about Biostar Injects Some Juice Into AMD’s Radeon RX 6700 XT
Valve releases tool to test whether your PC is VR ready
Further Reading SteamVR’s HTC Vive is $799, starts shipping in early April With HTC beginning to take pre-orders for the SteamVR-powered Vive headset in just one week, you may well be wondering if your PC tower is up for running high-end VR without any distracting lag. Worry not: Valve has just released a SteamVR Performance Test Tool to determine whether you are technologically ready to shell out $799 for an HTC Vive . Unlike Oculus' own Rift Compatibility Tool , which just seems to check your PC parts against a list without actually running a diagnostic, Valve's tool takes a few minutes to run through a small, non-interactive animation of a GLaDOS robot repair facility. The goal is to "determine whether your system is capable of running VR content at 90fps and whether VR content can tune the visual fidelity up to the recommended level," according to a Valve blog post . Afterwards, the tool gives an average fidelity rating (on a numerical and Low/Medium/High/Very High … [Read more...] about Valve releases tool to test whether your PC is VR ready
Nvidia releases a GPU hotfix to address screen flickering and Fortnite stuttering
Nvidia has released a GPU hotfix driver that you won't see in GeForce Experience, but is of interest to anyone affected by the handful of issues it addresses, such as intermittent stuttering in Fortnite and random screen flickering. The hotfix driver (version 461.81) is based on the 461.72 'Game Ready' driver that came out last week, which itself was a launch driver for the newly minted GeForce RTX 3060 . It is an optional release, meaning you have to hunt it down and manually apply it. Or you can sit back and wait—all seven fixes will be included in the next regular driver update, whenever that materializes. If you play Fortnite, you may not want to wait. The hotfix contains shader cache optimizations to address random stuttering in the game on "some PC configurations." Likewise, it fixes a screen flickering issue specific to the GeForce GTX 1660 Super, also on certain unspecified configs. There is another stuttering issue mentioned in the release notes. Nvidia says some … [Read more...] about Nvidia releases a GPU hotfix to address screen flickering and Fortnite stuttering
Apple Discontinues iMac Pro Workstation: Get It While Supplies Last
Apple is about to discontinue its iMac Pro all-in-one workstation. The system is currently only available in the default configuration while supplies last, and no replacement is planned, at least for now. Apple confirmed that it is discontinuing the iMac Pro in an interview with MacRumours . The company said that no replacement for the iMac Pro was planned because for the vast majority of iMac Pro users the latest iMac 27-inch in its high-end configuration is the preferred choice, whereas customers who need serious performance and expandability could opt for the Mac Pro. The main idea behind the iMac Pro was to put in an Intel Xeon W processor with up to 18 cores along with a discrete AMD Radeon Pro Vega 64X graphics processor and up to 256GB of DDR4-2666 ECC memory into an all-in-one PC with a 27-inch 5K display. Apple launched the system in late 2017. Since Apple did not have a competitive desktop workstation in its fleet, it made a lot of sense for performance-demanding … [Read more...] about Apple Discontinues iMac Pro Workstation: Get It While Supplies Last
