How to open Apple Numbers files on a Windows PC

How to use Dark Mode on Apple TV

Using a screen late at night can be bad for your eyes, and bad for your sleep patterns; it has become increasingly popular for software companies, therefore, to introduce alternative (usually darker and warmer) nighttime colour schemes for their interfaces in order to make things more comfortable for users. Apple has a well-known Dark Mode that aims to help with these problems, but the interesting thing is that officially, it is only available on the Apple TV. The iPhone has Invert Colour and Night Shift; the Mac has 'dark menu bar' mode ; but only the Apple TV has the full feature. In this article we briefly explain how it works, and how to switch it on. What is Dark Mode? Dark Mode for tvOS replaces the white Apple TV interface, with a darker option. It is only available for fourth-generation Apple TVs (with the TV app store) and later. Dark Mode arrived on the Apple TV as part of tvOS 10 . The difference is much more noticeable on tvOS than onmacOS, which as previously … [Read more...] about How to use Dark Mode on Apple TV

Apple’s iPhone privacy billboard is a clever CES troll, but it’s also inaccurate

Even without a booth, Apple is looming large over CES. Literally. In a giant billboard that went up on the side of the Springhill Suites Marriott hotel near the Vegas strip late last week, Apple is touting the privacy features baked into the iPhone, telling people, “What happens on your iPhone, stays on your iPhone.” It’s a clever and effective ad that plays off the classic Vegas slogan. And it’s timely. In an age of regular data breaches and scary hacks, privacy and security have become a really big deal. Apple has made privacy a major component of its iPhone sales pitch for years, so while the ad might not mention Google, Samsung, or Amazon, it’s clearly aimed at trolling Apple’s biggest rivals and their somewhat laissez-faire approach to privacy. The billboard’s claim is certainly true for parts of the iPhone. Maps doesn’t require nearly as many permissions as Google Maps to work properly. iMessages are encrypted end-to-end as opposed to Google’s RCS-based chat. Siri requests … [Read more...] about Apple’s iPhone privacy billboard is a clever CES troll, but it’s also inaccurate

Big changes to Siri, Marzipan, AR, and more could dramatically change the Apple ecosystem

A fascinating report at 9to5Mac offers a sneak peek at some of the announcements Apple has in store for developers at WWDC in June . Previous reports have focused on changes coming to iOS 13 and macOS 10.15 , but this leak is all about the tools developers use to make apps and services on Apple’s platforms. If they prove true, it could mean a big improvement in the way we use our iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Siri stretches out We’re certainly not the only ones lamenting the current state of Siri and the way Apple squandered an early lead in AI assistants. Apple’s got a lot of work to do to make Siri better in many ways, but the 9to5Mac report gives us a clue that at least some of Siri’s shortcomings may be addressed in the new versions of Apple’s operating systems. The report claims that developers can make use of new Siri intents, including “media playback, search, voice calling, event ticketing, message attachment, train trip, flight, airport gate and seat information.” … [Read more...] about Big changes to Siri, Marzipan, AR, and more could dramatically change the Apple ecosystem

Apple is finally building a TV app for Windows because it still doesn’t care about PCs

To paraphrase Steve Jobs, Apple fans stuck in Windows hell might soon be getting another glass of ice water. A new job listing spotted by neowin suggests that Apple is looking to build versions of Apple TV and Apple Music for Windows 10 and possibly even Xbox One. But don’t be fooled: If Apple really cared about Windows, we would’ve been hearing about this in 2017, not late 2019. The LinkedIn post for a “creative” Senior Software Engineer calls for a candidate with “strong skills in the areas of application design, solid API design principles and a strong understanding of customer and workflow issues” who has “a history of shipping large volume consumer product successfully.” That and the fact that you’d be working for the Apple Media Apps team makes it pretty clear that Apple is working on versions of its Apple TV and Apple Music apps for Windows 10. The listing also says knowledge of UWP is a plus, so that could mean Xbox is in line for Apple apps, too. Oddly enough, Windows … [Read more...] about Apple is finally building a TV app for Windows because it still doesn’t care about PCs

Apple Watch Series 3 vs Fitbit Versa 2: Even a two-year-old Apple Watch is hard to beat

The Fitbit Versa 2 was announced only a month ago and already its biggest competitor is trying to take it down. With the release of the Apple Watch Series 5 , Apple cut the price of the Series 3 to $199 , a near-30 percent drop over the prior year’s price. But more importantly, it means you can buy an Apple Watch for the same price as Fitbit’s latest smartwatch —99 cents less if you’re being technical. Of course, there’s one big difference between the two wearables: one’s two years old. Even though Apple Watch Series 3 can be updated to the newest version of watchOS (minus a couple watch faces), the fact remains that it was made in 2017. So, is an old Apple Watch worth as much as a brand-new Fitbit? Update 11/22: Fitbit will be rolling out Fitbit OS 4.1 to the Versa 2 in early December. This article has been updated to reflect the new features. Apple Watch Series 3 vs. Fitbit Versa 2: Design Unlike wearables from Fossil, LG, Huawei, and pretty much every Wear … [Read more...] about Apple Watch Series 3 vs Fitbit Versa 2: Even a two-year-old Apple Watch is hard to beat
