SINGAPORE: The Singapore Army is trialling a titanium-made exoskeleton designed to reduce the stress on soldiers carrying heavy loads. A section of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Day video released on Jul 1, captioned "Exoskeleton Trial", showed a soldier wearing a green exoskeleton on top of his army fatigues. In response to queries from CNA, the Ministry of Defence confirmed that the army is studying the use of an exoskeleton to improve soldier performance. "The Singapore Army is constantly looking for ways to enhance the performance of our soldiers, and the exoskeleton is one such example that the Centre of Excellence for Soldier Performance (CESP) is studying," it said. The CESP, set up in 2017, helps to develop the full potential of soldiers in areas like fitness and nutrition, pre-habilitation and rehabilitation, resilience and soldier systems. Manchester United’s Ighalo slams Nigeria government after soldiers fire at protesters
REUTERS: Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo says he is ashamed of the Nigerian government following reports that soldiers opened fire on protesters in the Lekki district of the commercial capital Lagos on Tuesday (Oct 20). Nigerians have been demonstrating nationwide every day for nearly two weeks against a police unit, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), that rights groups had for years accused of extortion, harassment, torture and murders. The unit was disbanded on Oct 11 but the protests have persisted and at least two people were shot on Tuesday. In a Twitter post, the Nigerian Army said no soldiers were at the scene of the shooting. Ighalo said in a video message on Twitter that while he rarely talks about politics he could not stay silent about events back home in Nigeria. "The Nigerian government, you guys are a shame to the world for killing your own citizens, sending military to the streets to kill unarmed protesters because they are protesting for their own … [Read more...] about Manchester United’s Ighalo slams Nigeria government after soldiers fire at protesters
Defense Ministry Harms Army Morale by Siding with Shirker
September 17, 2020 13:19 Revelations of special treatment received by Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae's son during his mandatory military service and the Defense Ministry's attempts to shield him from scrutiny are damaging troop morale and discipline. Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo told lawmakers on Wednesday, "It's true that documents have not been preserved at the unit, but no regulations were violated so there are no problems" with the justice minister's son taking nearly a month's sick leave after minor knee surgery. When asked why other soldiers who suffered much more serious injuries were not granted extended leave, Jeong said, "Their commanders did not consider the matter carefully." In other words, any discrimination is entirely somebody else's fault and has nothing to do with the fact that they have no friends in high places. Jeong himself seemed confused what the party line is. First he told lawmakers that the young man should only have taken four days off, but then he … [Read more...] about Defense Ministry Harms Army Morale by Siding with Shirker
Myanmar army probes ‘wider patterns’ of abuse against Rohingya
RAKHINE STATE: The Myanmar military has said it is investigating "possible wider patterns of violations" before and during a 2017 crackdown in Rakhine State that the United Nations has said was executed with genocidal intent against Rohingya Muslims. More than 730,000 Rohingya fled to Bangladesh that year following the launch of a sweeping security campaign that refugees said included mass killing, gang-rape and arson. The army has denied genocide, saying it was carrying out a legitimate operation against Rohingya militants, but says it has court-martialed some troops over incidents in certain villages though details on the perpetrators, their crimes, and sentences have not been released. READ: Terror at sea: Rohingya migrants tell of 200-day ordeal The military, in a statement carried in state media on Tuesday, acknowledged for the first time a possible broader pattern of abuses. It said the military-run Office of the Judge Advocate General had reviewed a report by a … [Read more...] about Myanmar army probes ‘wider patterns’ of abuse against Rohingya
NHRC issues show-cause notice to MoD on civilian killing in firing
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a show-cause notice to the the Ministry of Defence (MoD), asking why it should not recommend ₹5 lakh as relief for the family of a citizen killed in Army firing in Arunachal Pradesh in 2017, an NHRC statement said on Friday. The “innocent citizen”, Thingtu Ngemu, died in the “indiscriminate firing by the Army unit of 21 Para Special Forces (PSF) during an operation against Naxalites in Nantok circle, Changlang district, Arunachal Pradesh” on the intervening period of June 14-15, 2017, it said. “The Commission has communicated that the case needs to be treated as special because the Judicial Enquiry Magistrate has held that the PSF personnel are responsible for the death of an innocent citizen. The Commission has also emphasized that if the Defence Ministry pays the relief amount to the victim’s family on the basis of its show cause notice in such cases, it will send positive signals amongst the locals and the credibility of the … [Read more...] about NHRC issues show-cause notice to MoD on civilian killing in firing
Chinese researchers quit US, agents target Biden team: US officials
WASHINGTON: More than 1,000 Chinese researchers have left the United States amid a US crackdown on alleged technology theft, top US security officials said on Wednesday (Dec 2), adding that Chinese agents had already been targeting the incoming Biden administration. China dismissed the accusations as "ludicrous." John Demers, chief of the US Justice Department's National Security Division, told a discussion hosted by the Aspen Institute think tank the researchers had left the country while the department launched multiple criminal cases against Chinese operatives for industrial and technological espionage. A Justice Department official said they were a different group to those mentioned by the State Department in September, when it said the United States had revoked visas for more than 1,000 Chinese nationals under a presidential measure denying entry to students and researchers deemed security risks. The official said the researchers Demers referred to, whom US authorities … [Read more...] about Chinese researchers quit US, agents target Biden team: US officials
