Sofia Kourtesis’ “ Sarita Colonia ” builds for more than two full minutes before reaching a jittery, crushing cruising altitude full of stuttering drums and slicing horns. The track was released in early 2020, but its fizzy mid-section, crackling with the energy of an electrical fire, kept it fresh in our minds throughout the year. Kourtesis’ latest song is “By Your Side,” which initially lets off a more soothing energy — dulcet notes on what sounds like a keyboard, a melodic pinging riff that might be played on a triangle, a snippet of an announcer referring to the coziest of standards, “I Only Have Eyes for You.” This surplus of cooled-out energy makes it all the more exciting when a battery of horns blurt through the calm, 122-beats-per-minute groove with all the grace of a brass band tuning up in a quiet cafe. “By Your Side” will appear on Fresia Magdalena , a new EP out March 19th. That release follows last year’s Sarita Colonia , a four-track set, and Kourtesis’ … [Read more...] about Song You Need to Know: Sofia Kourtesis, ‘By Your Side’

Martin Scorsese brings Bob Dylan’s strange 1975 bus tour to the big screen
Director Martin Scorsese has made his second film about Bob Dylan, and this time the filmmaker has taken a cue from the elusive rock star to weave a fantastical mix of facts and imagination. Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story, to be released on Netflix and in limited movie theatres in the US on Jun 12, depicts one of the singer's strangest concert tours – his 1975 US road trip that had the playfulness of an old-time medicine show and a camera crew in tow. The Rolling Thunder tour, with an eclectic troupe of performers that included folk singers Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez and Roger McGuinn, as well as poet Allen Ginsberg and glam rocker Mick Ronson, played in small venues with little advance notice, despite Dylan's status at the time as a major star. "It wasn't a success, not if you measure success in terms of profit. But it was an adventure," Dylan says in Scorsese's film. Dylan shaped some of the documentary footage into the 1978 film Renaldo and Clara, blending it with … [Read more...] about Martin Scorsese brings Bob Dylan’s strange 1975 bus tour to the big screen
Robbie Savage’s mum says ‘£180m lottery win is too much for just one person’
Imagining what we’d do if we won the lottery is a guaranteed cheerer upper. Especially now, when the lottery jackpots seem bigger than ever. My mum played the same numbers every week and I still remember them. If she won a tenner she was as delighted as if she’d won a million. But I agreed when Mum said the jackpots were too big and the lottery should be more widely shared to make more families happy. If one person won last night’s £180million Euro lottery, surely that’s too much for any one person? I stopped playing the lottery after I lost Mum. But I still sometimes imagine what I’d do if I won. I’d look after any friends and family who were a bit short then donate to charities. And I’d build a special Alzheimer’s home and personally interview all the staff to make sure they had genuine kindness. I have no interest in swapping my house for a big mansion because my memories of my late husband Colin are here. Posh designer clothes don’t give me a thrill because I’d only get … [Read more...] about Robbie Savage’s mum says ‘£180m lottery win is too much for just one person’

Creative Capital: The Singaporean hip-hop and dancehall artist who has headlined festivals all over the world
Chances are, you watched box office smash hit Fast and Furious 8 when it hit the cinemas back in April 2017. But did you know that the song sampled in the film’s title track Speakerbox – which was also used in the global trailer – was by a Singaporean artist? The name of the song sampled is Warriors Tongue and the artist is MAS1A. Born in Singapore and raised in Canada, MAS1A – previously known as Masia One – earned her stripes in the rap and hip-hop scene in the United States and was inspired by the sounds of Jamaica. Most of her career was established overseas, during which she worked with such luminaries as Pharrell, Dr Dre, The Game, RZA of Wu Tang Clan fame, and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ John Frusciante.
