Luther’s lack of black friends ‘doesn’t feel authentic’, BBC diversity chief says

TV detective Luther "doesn't feel authentic" because he has no black friends and doesn't eat Caribbean food, a BBC diversity boss has suggested. Idris Elba plays detective Luther in the critically-acclaimed BBC drama of the same name, which has ran for five seasons since 2010. Elba was praised by BBC creative diversity chief Miranda Wayland for playing a "really strong, black character lead" during the MIPTV conference on Wednesday. She added though that by the second series, she was questioning the character's authenticity. Ms Wayland said that TV bosses must ensure that black characters are supported by an environment and culture that is "absolutely reflective" of their background. Advertisement She said: "When it first came out, everybody loved the fact that Idris Elba was in there. A really strong, black character lead. We all fell in love with Luther. Who didn't, right? "But after you got into about the second series, you were kind of … [Read more...] about Luther’s lack of black friends ‘doesn’t feel authentic’, BBC diversity chief says

Lunch With Sumiko: Grab whiz Tan Hooi Ling happy to stay low-key

I was planning to use GrabCar to get to my lunch with Ms Tan Hooi Ling, the co-founder of Grab. But the night before, I heard how a private-hire car driver had to ask his passenger to guide him along the route. I didn't want to risk being late, so I called for a Comfort cab instead. The driver had no problems getting me there. Ms Tan has chosen Bukit Merah View Market and Food Centre to meet. Her PR folks had assured me there was a reason for her choice. It's a hot day and the centre is noisy, filling up fast with a lunch crowd. I settle at a table in the quietest corner I can find and message Grab's PR manager, Claire, to let her know where I'm sitting. They arrive, via Grab, of course. Ms Tan, 33, whose title is both co-founder and chief operating officer, is tall and very slim. She's in a black T-shirt and jeans, both from Uniqlo, and white sneakers. She's barefaced except for a lick of lipstick, and carries a grey, haversack-styled bag. She could pass off as a university … [Read more...] about Lunch With Sumiko: Grab whiz Tan Hooi Ling happy to stay low-key

George Floyd killing: Retired doctor’s testimony key to Derek Chauvin’s defence

Derek Chauvin's defence team was evidently relying heavily on the testimony of retired medical examiner Dr David Fowler to persuade the jurors of the former police officer's innocence. He was the only witness called to give evidence on day 13 of the trial. The forensic pathologist, serving as an expert witness, outlined to the jury his reading of all of the evidence in the case and his conclusion that officer Chauvin's knee was not responsible for George Floyd's death. He told the court that Mr Floyd's heart disease and drug use were the primary cause. He added that the stress of his arrest and the release of adrenaline from a tumour in his abdomen contributed, as did possible carbon monoxide from the police car exhaust as he was restrained nearby. It was a very different conclusion from that of the medical examiner who performed the post-mortem examination on Mr Floyd. Dr Andrew Baker told the court on Friday that the restraint of Mr Floyd was his cause of death. … [Read more...] about George Floyd killing: Retired doctor’s testimony key to Derek Chauvin’s defence

Pride Toronto makes the right call on police

The timing was odd. The parameters were blurred. The internal dynamics are sketchy. On the surface, it certainly appears that Pride Toronto and the Toronto Police Service have made peace. Once all the i’s have been dotted and the t’s crossed — most specifically, once a formal request to participate next year has been submitted and approved — cops will again be welcome to fly the blue in the Pride Parade. Whether officers will be permitted to carry their service weapons, whether a police float can be included, are details to be resolved later. But, in uniform, they are no longer personae non gratae . Which is a win for gays — and straights, for that matter — who were deeply dismayed by a previous executive decision that sent cops to Coventry these past two years. Sisters who started fashion empire in their garden shed now turning over £3m a year

Two sisters who launched a fashion brand from their garden shed four years ago have turned their start-up into a multi-million pound business that now employs a team of 15. Alice, 25, and Maisie Jones, 22, from Hope, Flintshire, started their empire, Sisters & Seekers in 2017 using £2,000 they’d saved from selling vintage clothes online. The duo set up a warehouse in their shed, designing and modelling ‘athleisure’ style clothing aimed at 18–30 years olds. Now, they employ a full team and have their very own warehouse in Llay near Wrexham. Alice, who worked as a junior design engineer before launching the brand, told the Daily Post they embrace UK talent and support local suppliers who embellish and embroider their lines. Have you got a business success story? Get in touch: [email protected] Sister Maisie was finishing sixth form and embarking on her degree in Business Management when the business was founded. The entrepreneurs recalled … [Read more...] about Sisters who started fashion empire in their garden shed now turning over £3m a year
