From 24/7 service to ‘estero-telling’: Checking up on the state of public libraries

It may be considered wrong to judge things by physical appearance, but in the case of public infrastructure, created by and maintained under the jurisdiction of the government, how much would physical appearance matter? What does, for example, a public library in a state of disrepair say about the way it is run? Or what can be said about the relevance of a library, decked with the latest technologies and collections, if it is always empty? A law led the way for the creation of more public libraries. In June 1994, Republic Act No. 7743 was passed, an act providing for the establishment of public libraries (congressional, city, municipal and barangay-level) throughout the Philippines. The goal was to elevate the literacy and promote the moral and intellectual well-being of Filipinos. The establishment of public libraries shall be an integral part of local government units, with a regular annual library appropriation to be allocated, based on a budget estimate proposed by a head … [Read more...] about From 24/7 service to ‘estero-telling’: Checking up on the state of public libraries

New, ‘prescriptive’ laws not the ideal solution against online falsehoods: Social media, Internet giants in written submissions

SINGAPORE: In addressing the issue of fake news, new prescriptive laws are not an ideal solution, according to industry association Asia Internet Coalition (AIC), whose members include social media companies like Google, Facebook and Twitter. Instead, a “stringent self-regulatory approach”, executed in coordination and cooperation with the authorities, will have a better outcome. The association made this point in its written representation to the Select Committee on Deliberate Online Falsehoods. It gave oral evidence to the committee on Thursday (Mar 22), together with representatives from Google, Facebook and Twitter. Explaining its rationale, AIC’s managing director Jeff Paine said in his written representation that prescriptive legislation will not adequately address the issue effectively, due to the highly subjective, nuanced and difficult task of discerning whether information is true or false. “There is also a real risk of compromising freedom of expression and speech … [Read more...] about New, ‘prescriptive’ laws not the ideal solution against online falsehoods: Social media, Internet giants in written submissions

The Three Pillars of Leadership

Source: Free-Photos/Shutterstock Authentic leaders are, by definition, singular individuals. They possess a unique array of qualities and skills that enable them to lead others. Yet, we shouldn’t assume that these attributes are unattainable or too challenging to learn. Leadership skills are uncommon simply because we’ve received little or no education in this subject. If mathematics wasn’t routinely taught in school, mastering math would also be a rare achievement. And so the same is true of leadership. Culturally, we tend to focus on the external characteristics of leaders: how they present themselves, their intelligence , their style, and their affect. The path to sustainable and genuine leadership, however, is the inner path. This is a pathway that can be learned and cultivated. I envision three pillars that act as a platform for authentic leadership. Learning these skills enables genuine leadership ability for corporations, organizations, associations, and … [Read more...] about The Three Pillars of Leadership
