Chile receives 5th shipment of Chinese Sinovac vaccine against COVID-19

Video Player Close SANTIAGO, March 8 (Xinhua) -- The Chilean government on Monday received a fifth shipment of CoronaVac vaccine from Chinese pharmaceutical firm Sinovac. Chilean Minister of Health Enrique Paris and other officials were at the airport in Santiago to receive the shipment. "The population can be sure of the supply and arrival of vaccines," Paris said, highlighting the progress the country has made in its vaccination process. The Sinovac vaccine was approved for emergency use on Jan. 20 by the Public Health Institute of Chile. China-developed vaccines have been the basis of the country's mass vaccination campaign against COVID-19, which kicked off on Feb. 3, with the goal of immunizing 5 million people in high-risk groups in the first three months of the year, followed by another 15 million people by midyear. To date, the South American country has vaccinated 4,176,094 people, with more than half a million having received their second doses. Int’l Critics Line: Anna Smith On Chile’s Oscar-Shortlisted ‘The Mole Agent’

An 83-year-old man goes undercover in a nursing home in The Mole Agent , Chilean director Maite Alberdi ’s Oscar hopeful that’s been shortlisted for both International Feature and Documentary. While it’s filmed and scored in the style of a playful spy movie, it’s most remarkable in its quieter moments, as the true heart of the story emerges. The Mole Agent is shot through Sergio’s spy glasses, more comes from the professional crew ostensibly filming a straightforward doc about the care home — as far as we know, no staff or residents know Sergio’s real reason for spending three months there. Like many a good cover story, his is credible because it’s rooted in reality. He’s grieving his wife, and much as he loves his grown-up children, he could use new company and a change of scene. The Mole Agent is a particularly compelling piece of cinema. Int’l Critics Line: Todd McCarthy On Tunisia’s Oscar-Shortlisted ‘The Man Who Sold His Skin’

The doings of the international art world often seem arcane and over the top, but never moreso than as depicted in The Man Who Sold His Skin . This is a madly dramatic and engrossing melodrama about a political refugee whose unique predicament bundles with it issues pertaining to personal and political identity, the Middle East quagmire, romantic rejection and the outer limits of art world presumption and extravagance. Tunisia’s shortlisted submission in the International Feature Oscar race is a very tasty couscous of fine ingredients and flat-out entertaining enough to warrant significant international exposure. Kaouther Ben Hania ’s follow-up to her 2017 Cannes Un Certain Regard selection Beauty And The Dogs is notable for its gutsy narrative moves, rich visuals and sheer drive, which marks her, along with her notably resourceful and elegant Lebanese cinematographer Christopher Aoun, as talents who should emerge even more decisively before long. Vaccine exports lift brands’ presence

Experiences accumulated from the development and export of COVID-19 vaccines will help bolster the presence of Chinese pharmaceutical, biotech and medical product companies on the world arena, business leaders and analysts said. "The export of our COVID-19 vaccines helped us gain international recognition and credibility, which in turn contributed to the export of the company's other vaccine-related products," said Pearson Liu, director of brand management and public relations at Sinovac Biotech Ltd. For example, since 2009, Sinovac has been promoting the clinical trials and registration of its inactivated vaccine against hepatitis A in South Korea. On Dec 29, the vaccine was approved by the local medical products administration, he said. Currently, apart from the COVID-19 vaccine and hepatitis-A vaccine, Sinovac owns Enterovirus Type 71 vaccine, which prevents hand-foot-mouth disease, combined hepatitis-A and B vaccine, H5N1 influenza vaccine, among others. "Through our … [Read more...] about Vaccine exports lift brands’ presence

China’s growth gives impetus to global economy

Owing to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 was an uneasy year for the world, especially for the global economy. Against a background of severe and complicated situation abroad, and arduous reform tasks at home, China's hard-won positive economic performance (mentioned by Premier Li Keqiang in this year's Government Work Report) received considerable attention and appreciation worldwide. Three major factors are key to China's efforts for sustainable growth this year. First, thanks to the effective measures of epidemic prevention and control last year, the country's stable economic growth and social development have laid a solid foundation for its manufacturers to export more products to the global market. With its economy entering a normalized growth track, China's foreign trade will be firmly supported by stable supply and industrial chains, ensuring supply capacity for its exports and further expanding domestic demand. Second, there is an opportunity in the enhanced … [Read more...] about China’s growth gives impetus to global economy
