‘Last Week Tonight’: John Oliver Blasts Texas For Lifting Covid-19 Restrictions And Tucker Carlson’s Dr. Seuss Rant

John Olver had a lot to unpack as Last Week Tonight hits its first birthday in the white void. For those who are new to the HBO show, production of Oliver’s show shifted to this mystery space at the top of the pandemic which has proven to be quite entertaining and enjoyable. As much as I would like to see the show return to the studio, there is a peaceful comfort to see Oliver wrap up the week’s news in the white void. Nonetheless, amid Andrew Cumos growing scandals and moderate Democrats killing hopes of a $15 minimum wage, Oliver started by commenting on the opening of certain spaces as cases of Covid-19 begin to decrease and the vaccine slowly gains traction. He specifically focused on how the Milwaukee Bucks started welcoming fans in limited numbers back into its stadium by a cartoon squirt bottle of hand sanitizer. In news footage, we see many people getting squirted by said animated bottle which Oliver had jokes about — many of them inappropriate, but hey it’s HBO and … [Read more...] about ‘Last Week Tonight’: John Oliver Blasts Texas For Lifting Covid-19 Restrictions And Tucker Carlson’s Dr. Seuss Rant

IDG APPOINTS COLIN CRAWFORD VP, NEW BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AND OPERATIONS

BOSTON, MA - MARCH 26, 2003 - International Data Group (IDG), the world's leading technology media company, today announced the appointment of Colin Crawford to vice president of new business development and operations. In his new position, Crawford will identify, evaluate, and recommend new business opportunities, handle strategic acquisitions and alliances for IDG, and coordinate operations between diverse IDG business units to share best practices and promote new growth. "Growth is the best byproduct of computer industry change, and IDG is adding horsepower to grow by buying and partnering with media companies as well as by starting them," said Pat Kenealy, CEO of IDG. "A decentralized company like ours names corporate vice presidents very rarely, but Colin's nearly-two-decade track record at IDG, most of it running business units, has earned him the respect and the trust of the dozens of IDG publishers and country managers worldwide." Most recently, Crawford was president and … [Read more...] about IDG APPOINTS COLIN CRAWFORD VP, NEW BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AND OPERATIONS

Is nonpartisan effectiveness still possible?

Here’s something interesting, that might come as a pleasant surprise: Except for five small countries, the U.S. is at the top of vaccination rates when compared to the rest of the world. So how did this happen? And who gets credit? Since we’re now more than a month into Joe Biden’s presidency, credit for the success of the COVID-19 vaccination program — from its creation last year to its distribution this year — can be shared between the Democratic 46th president and the Republican 45th president, Donald Trump Donald Trump Biden to sign executive order aimed at increasing voting access Albany Times Union editorial board calls for Cuomo's resignation Advocates warn restrictive voting bills could end Georgia's record turnout MORE . Of course, there’s another category that transcends the partisan political framework: the non-partisan hero. For a year now, frontline emergency workers have been saving lives — and sometimes losing their own lives in the process — … [Read more...] about Is nonpartisan effectiveness still possible?

Ice-cold Sabres still can’t beat red-hot Islanders

“Hockey Day in America” proved to be a lot like any other day in 2021 for the Islanders and Sabres. Meaning: the Islanders stayed red-hot, while the Sabres remained very much not. At least until a late push by Buffalo. The Islanders have now won all six of their games against the Sabres so far in 2020-21, taking Sunday’s game 5-2. To make matters a little worse, all six of the Islanders’ wins over the Sabres came in regulation. In Sunday’s case, you could argue that the game was over after Brock Nelson and Anders Lee scored goals just 62 seconds apart. A 3-0 Casey Cizikas goal made things that much more desolate for Buffalo during that same second period. That said, the Sabres did make things interesting during the third period. With two goals in a bit less than four minutes, Buffalo shrunk the margin to 3-2. There were some tense moments for Ilya Sorokin , including a Colin Miller goal he arguably should have stopped. Cal Clutterbuck ‘s 4-2 tally ended up … [Read more...] about Ice-cold Sabres still can’t beat red-hot Islanders

What Is the Ex-President Thinking?

I was reading the Harry Potter series when I was struck down by the flu in late January. I had a cough, minor temperature swings, dream sweats, and I couldn’t leave my bed for anything but the toilet or the easiest meals. Gumbo soup, pre-cooked chicken in bottled vindaloo sauce, hot and sour soup; the nursing skills of my normally destructive dog; Harry Potter, and watching ballet documentaries on my phone entertained me between long naps. I got tested earlier this week. I didn’t have COVID-19 . Only the cough and sweats fit. I could taste spicy food (it helped me cough), I had no energy to stand up in the shower. It was a run-of-the-mill flu but oh, my, I was bored in that gray space of illness. The impeachment trial of Donald Trump made me human. I watched it on my phone in real-time, read everything I could, watched documentaries about Q, read Twitter like it was the Heathers planning college visits. I knew, as I imagine most of us did, what the outcome of the trial would … [Read more...] about What Is the Ex-President Thinking?

‘Allen v. Farrow’: Docu on 29-year-old sexual abuse case a moral reckoning in the age of #MeToo

It’s more a case of David and Goliath than “Batman v Superman.” Indeed, while the two conflicting parties grappling for their versions of the truth in HBO’s explosive four-part documentary “Allen v. Farrow” are both Hollywood celebrities, you don’t need to be an expert at rocket science to realize just how powerful one is compared to the other. We’re talking about four-time Oscar-winning writer-actor-director Woody Allen (“Annie Hall,” “Manhattan,” “Hannah and Her Sisters”) and his muse-turned-nemesis actress Mia Farrow (“Rosemary’s Baby,” “The Great Gatsby”). In the ’80s and early ’90s, the fabled couple did 13 films together. Woody, who’s now 85 years old, has made a film every year for 40 straight years, and is now preparing to shoot his 51st film—how prolific can you get?
