Top Twitter Exec Leaves The Nest, But Growing Pains Remain

Twitter can't reignite growth without cracking a few egg shells, or at least that appears to be the company's approach. Just in the first half of this year, Twitter's head of product , head of engineering and now its chief operating officer have stepped down from their positions at the company. Each time, the language Twitter used to announce their departures was the same: an executive stepping down or resigning to take on an "advisory role" before ultimately leaving the company. See also: Twitter Is Not Doomed In reality, reports suggest that Twitter and its CEO Dick Costolo have been working to rearrange the ranks in order to streamline operations and tackle the issue that has preoccupied investors ever since the IPO: slowing user growth. Rowghani, in particular, had earned praise for steering Twitter through a successful IPO, but proved less successful in reigniting user numbers, a responsibility he'd been tasked with last year. "Rowghani was tasked with improving … [Read more...] about Top Twitter Exec Leaves The Nest, But Growing Pains Remain

Twitter Engineering Lead Chris Fry Is Leaving the Nest

Twitter 's engineering lead, Chris Fry, is stepping away from his role, according to documents filed Thursday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Fry will assume an advisory role with Twitter, a typical move for an executive transitioning out of an important role. Alex Roetter, another senior member of Twitter's engineering team, will take over for Fry as Senior VP of Engineering, according to the documents. Phuket agog over strange fruit

PA KHLOK, PHUKET: Villagers in Pa Khlok are unsure whether two recently discovered agricultural oddities are signs of good luck – or eerie harbingers of man’s impact on the environment. The strange specimens were found on the grounds of two local primary schools located side-by-side in the small coastal community of Ban Thala. Manoj Hawharn, a janitor at the Phuket Panyanukul School for special needs children, discovered the first as he was preparing to cut down some old banana trees growing at the school. The trees are a locally popular variety of the Musa banana called kluay namwah in Thai. Defying the odds, one of the trees had an enormous clump of bananas sprouting not from the treetop as usual, but from the center of its stem. “I have never seen anything like it in my 45 years of life. My mom said ‘Don’t touch or do anything to it. Just leave it be.’ …So we didn’t cut it, but waited for it to die naturally,” he said. Word travels quickly in a Thai village and before … [Read more...] about Phuket agog over strange fruit

Swiftlet sorrow in Phuket Town

PHUKET: The tenant of a building in Phuket Town has been given 15 days to remove an illegally added fourth floor built as an aviary for swiftlets, the birds that cough up the key ingredient for bird’s nest soup. Phuket officials yesterday investigated an anonymous complaint filed last month about a commercial building located behind the DTAC office on Montri Road . The plaintiff wrote that the tenant not only added a new floor to the dwelling, but was also using a sound system to play annoying bird songs in the hope of attracting swiftlets to the new structure. Swiftlet nests come in a variety of grades, but top-quality versions can fetch as much as 60,000 baht per kilogram. Phuket Vice Governor Somkiet Sangkaosutthirak, who led the investigation team, said that leaseholder Krittaya Chinthanasap had for a long time occupied the premises under a renewable three-year lease with the Phuket Treasury Office. The investigation confirmed that the building originally had three … [Read more...] about Swiftlet sorrow in Phuket Town

A Decade Ago: Airport taxis at it again

PHUKET: As Phuket continues to stumble through the fog of beach rules following the National Council for Peace and Order’s cleanup last year, it is refreshing to look back on simpler times at Patong Beach. Just a decade ago, as the island geared up for its first high season after the tsunami, a total of 1,000 masseuses rolled out beach mats and got to work on 1,000 tourists for what was reportedly the world’s longest massage. There is something striking about the photo; no beach umbrellas, chairs or loungers. And despite the presence of more than 2,000 people on the beach, it looks beautiful. The lead story, however, has nothing to do with the picture on page one. It is, in fact, that masochistic, perhaps even necrophilic, dead horse that just keeps on keeping on: airport taxis. Ah… yes, even with the taxi mafia allegedly being swept up in island-wide raids last year, the issues of taxis to and from the airport continues to rage on. Nonetheless, the November 5-11 issue of the … [Read more...] about A Decade Ago: Airport taxis at it again
