BERLIN: Germany has secured enough supplies for now of remdesivir, which is set to become the first COVID-19 treatment approved in Europe, and is banking on developer Gilead to meet future needs, the country's health ministry said on Wednesday (Jul 1). The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) this week said it had secured all of Gilead's projected production for July and 90 per cent of its production in August and September, in addition to an allocation for clinical trials. "The federal government has early on secured remdesivir for the treatment of coronavirus patients. Currently, there are still sufficient reserves," Germany's health ministry told Reuters in a written statement. With a conditional market approval, which is expected to be issued by the EU Commission this week, comes an obligation to deliver sufficient quantities in the future, it added. "We trust Gilead will meet this obligation," the ministry said. Once supplies are less constrained, HHS will … [Read more...] about Germany has for now enough remdesivir for COVID-19 therapy: Government

Trading resumes in Germany’s DAX, other exchanges after outage
LONDON: Trading in German blue-chip index DAX and other exchanges across Europe resumed after nearly three hours of outage on Wednesday due to a "technical issue" at German electronic trading platform Xetra. The interruption in the fully-electronic cash market trading system affected stock exchanges in Frankfurt, Vienna, Ljubljana, Prague, Budapest, Zagreb, Malta and Sofia as they use the Xetra T7 system, exchange operator Deutsche Boerse said. The technical snag is a further blow to Deutsche Boerse, which saw one of its longest outages in April when the Frankfurt stock exchange was halted for more than four hours. Chief Executive Theodor Weimer said after the April blackout that the stock exchange had taken precautions to avoid such a breakdown in the future. Exchanges came back online around 0930 GMT, but the cause of the disruption in Xetra on Wednesday was not immediately clear. Deutsche Boerse spokesman Patrick Kalbhenn declined to comment. The German stock exchange's … [Read more...] about Trading resumes in Germany’s DAX, other exchanges after outage
H&M’s online second-hand shop Sellpy launches in Germany
STOCKHOLM: Swedish online second-hand shop Sellpy, which is majority-owned by fashion giant H&M, has launched in Germany in a first step outside its home market as it bets on shoppers trending towards more sustainable consumption. The start-up handles the entire sales process from picking up the goods from sellers' homes, to photographing, selling and shipping. Sellpy announced in May that it would double its warehouse capacity in Sweden, to near eight million items annually, due to strong demand. Since Sellpy's foundation in 2014, more than 6 million items have been sold through the platform, it said. The second-hand market is one of the fastest growing economic sectors within the fashion industry, Sellpy and H&M said in a joint statement on Monday. H&M first invested in Sellpy in 2015 and now holds a 70per cent stake. "We see that the awareness and demand from our customers for sustainable fashion is constantly growing and is now probably greater than ever," … [Read more...] about H&M’s online second-hand shop Sellpy launches in Germany
Exclusive: Germany missed chances to put Wirecard on watchlist – source
FRANKFURT: German regulators twice looked into tightening the supervision of collapsed payments firm Wirecard and discussed it with the German and European central banks but no action was taken, a person with direct knowledge of the talks told Reuters. Wirecard's implosion came years after the first allegations of fraud by some investors and journalists and the focus is now shifting to how regulators supervised a company that was hiding a US$2.1 billion hole in its books. In 2017, officials from German financial regulator BaFin and the country's central bank, or Bundesbank, considered placing Wirecard on a list of financial companies to supervise but decided against it, the person said. In the second half of 2019, there were discussions for months, which involved the European Central Bank (ECB), about putting Wirecard on a watchlist to give authorities more power to investigate it, the person said. But the talks dragged into 2020 and were still inconclusive when they were … [Read more...] about Exclusive: Germany missed chances to put Wirecard on watchlist – source
Germany investigating 30,000 suspects in paedophile probe
BERLIN: Germany is investigating around 30,000 suspects as part of a widening probe into a paedophile network in the western Bergisch Gladbach region, authorities said on Monday (Jun 29). The cyber crime unit in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia is "investigating 30,000 unknown suspects" in the case, the justice ministry for Germany's most populous state said in a tweet. "We want to drag perpetrators and supporters of child abuse out of the anonymity of the internet," the ministry said. Those being investigated are suspected of sharing "child and youth pornographic content" including "fictitious and/or real acts of abuse" in anonymous online discussion forums and chat groups, the cyber crime unit ZAC NRW said in a statement. "I did not expect, not even remotely, the extent of child abuse on the internet," North Rhine-Westphalia's justice minister Peter Beisenbach told reporters. What the investigation team had uncovered was "deeply disturbing", he said. "We must … [Read more...] about Germany investigating 30,000 suspects in paedophile probe
