The 25th of April is a special day for songwriter Diane Warren . Not just because it’s the Oscars and she’s nominated for her 12th Best Song in a row for “Io Sì (Seen)” from the Netflix Sophia Loren movie The Life Ahead , but also because it’s her late father’s birthday. “He would have been 105 years old. He was the first to believe in me. He’d take me to publishers when I was 15,” she tells us on the latest Crew Call podcast about the potential good luck day. She joins us with the song’s co-lyricist, Italian Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Laura Pausini to talk about how they collaborated on the song, and what spoke to them in the Edoardo Ponti-directed movie about an elderly Holocaust survivor and her oversee of the street kid who robbed her. The Simpsons animator, character layout artist and assistant director Edwin E. Aguilar died in Los Angeles on Saturday, two days after having a stroke. He was 46. While the news of Aguilar’s passing was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, it was also noted on Sunday by The Simpsons executive producer, Matt Selman. “We @TheSimpsons family are mourning the loss of animator Edwin Aguilar ,” he tweeted, “a talented artist and beloved fountain of love and inspiration to all.” Reportedly, Aguilar’s health had been on the decline for years, given his struggle with diabetes and heart issues. Several years ago, the artist had a stroke, from which he recovered. Born in the San Miguel region of El Salvador in 1974, Aguilar gravitated toward comic strips at an early age. Her debut album, 1979’s Rickie Lee Jones , had transformed her into America’s leading boho pop star, thanks to its hit “Chuck E.’s in Love.” She’d made the cover of Rolling Stone, and her followup record, 1981’s Pirates , was one of the most critically acclaimed albums of that year. She was also in an on-again, off-again relationship with fellow songwriter Tom Waits and had begun using heroin. In the summer of 1983, at age 28, Jones’ life appeared to be settling down. She relocated to Paris and was kicking drugs. Then she heard that one of her heroes, Van Morrison , was performing at the Lisdoonvarna Festival in County Clare, Ireland, so she took a side trip before heading back to the States.
