The easy, DIY system for group-editing big documents

When you’re collaborating on documents with other people, sharing a folder on a cloud-based storage system like Dropbox is convenient way to keep everyone’s copies of those docs updated automatically. But nothing in that system prevents two people from opening and changing a given document at the same time. That can lead to version conflicts and confusion. You could avoid this problem—and make it easier to see who made which changes and when—with a formal version-control system. Teams of programmers working on a project often use tools like Apache Subversion (SVN), Concurrent Versions System ( CVS ), or Git to manage their files. These tools ensure that only one person can modify a file at once, let everyone know who’s working on a file at any moment, and keep a historical record of changes so that any earlier version can be recalled in the future. But for a lot of projects, a complex version-control system and its associated software and repositories are overkill. There … [Read more...] about The easy, DIY system for group-editing big documents

Hands-on: Adobe Slate takes another stab at “visual stories”

Adobe just launched a new iPad app that aims to make anyone feel like a magazine editor. It’s called Adobe Slate, and it offers a way to mash up words and pictures into slick-looking stories for the web. Slate automates things like animations and transitions, and purposely limits control over fonts and formatting, so that anyone can make a good-looking story with no design know-how. The end-result is a webpage, hosted by Adobe, that automatically formats itself to fit any screen size. ( Here’s an example .) Slate is available now as a free app for the iPad . Why this matters: Adobe is following in the footsteps of other new-age presentation and storytelling apps such as Microsoft Sway , FlowVella , and Haiku Deck , all of which try to automate the kinds of flourishes that once required serious PowerPoint or web programming chops. You give up control in the process, but the barriers to designing a polished web story are much lower. So easy, you might wish it was … [Read more...] about Hands-on: Adobe Slate takes another stab at “visual stories”

Adobe Photoshop on iPad? This ‘Hotel Transylvania 3’ artist is ready for the revolution

Lizzie Nichols tells me she’s mildly insulted that painting programs like Procreate get stuffed under “Entertainment” on the iPad App Store. I can’t say I blame her. Nichols is one of the visual development artists for Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation , which hit theaters late last week and has consistently racked up praise for its art and animation (if not its crass humor). Art is her business—specifically, the painting of environments and props that inform 3D designers how a production should look, along with the painting of characters—and she does it well. She worked on the previous Hotel Transylvania film, and her long list of credits include The Emoji Movie , Smurfs: The Lost Village , Futurama , along with freelance work for the likes of Disney Television and Cartoon Network. And she does almost all of it with Adobe Photoshop on a Mac Pro with an attached Wacom Cintiq Companion display. But that may soon change. Around the same time … [Read more...] about Adobe Photoshop on iPad? This ‘Hotel Transylvania 3’ artist is ready for the revolution

2020 iOS Predictions: iPad Pro and so many iPhones

All told, 2019 was a relatively quiet year for the iPhone and iPad. Apple brought back some old favorites to round out the iPad product line, and a new batch of incrementally improved iPhones was released in the fall, as anyone could have predicted . But quiet years aren’t really quiet. They generally mean that at Apple Park, there are projects coming to fruition, only to be sprung on an unsuspecting public the next year. And so, once again , I present one man’s attempt to guess what projects will finally become products in 2020. iPhone: More of the same? The iPhone 11 Plus is the third iteration of the iPhone X and the iPhone 11 is the second iteration of the iPhone XR. Unless Apple has a surprise iPhone redesign up its sleeve, 2020 is due to bring us the not-entirely-exciting third and fourth iterations of those familiar products. The truth is, Apple can’t reinvent the wheel every year, as much as the media and many iPhone fans would like it to. (Apple would like it, … [Read more...] about 2020 iOS Predictions: iPad Pro and so many iPhones
