Nearly 100 students will be laid off from their part-time jobs at the Toronto Catholic school board because the programs they work for are being axed by the Ford government as part of the province’s $25 million funding cut to school boards. Those job losses are just the “tip of the iceberg” because all of Ontario’s 72 school boards are being impacted by funding cuts or reductions to specialized grants. “It’s deplorable and despicable,” said Toronto Catholic District School Board chair Maria Rizzo. “Kids will suffer in the long run (by the cuts).” A report by the board’s staff to its trustees outlines which of its programs have been impacted by the cuts and reductions because of the 2018-2019 funding changes to EPO (Education Program-Other). Cancelled programs include the Focus on Youth’s after-school program, which operates in high-needs urban neighbourhoods and employs about 60 part-time students, mostly from high school. Also on the chopping block is the Tutors in the … [Read more...] about Students to lose jobs after Ford government axes school programs

National governance, public administration improve: PAPI report
Since 2018, PAPI has been co-funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) of Australia, the Embassy of Ireland and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Vietnam. The report, which assessed citizen experiences with national and local government performance in governance, public administration, and public service delivery, showed that the Control of Corruption in the Public Sector dimension has improved significantly each year since 2016. The dimension on Vertical Accountability Towards Citizens also steadily improved during the 2016-2021 term, mainly because an increasing number of citizens have contacted local officials, in particular village heads and People’s Council delegates. Dimensions posting declines included Participation at Local Levels and Public Administrative Procedures. “New features of the 2020 PAPI Report include insightful findings on the performance of local governments across two terms (2011-2016 and 2016-2021); experience of internal … [Read more...] about National governance, public administration improve: PAPI report
Poll: 76% of Japanese Think Government Not Doing Enough Against Coronavirus
Japan’s Asahi Shimbun newspaper published the results of a poll Monday showing 76 percent of voters believe the government’s “pre-emergency” measures to halt the spread of the Chinese coronavirus are “not enough.” The same ratio of Japanese voters said the country’s vaccination program was running “slow,” according to the survey, conducted by the Asahi Shimbun in a nationwide telephone poll from April 10-11. The survey took place shortly after the Japanese government imposed “pre-emergency” measures on three prefectures – Osaka, Hyogo, and Miyagi – on April 5 to curb the spread of the Chinese coronavirus amid an uptick in new cases regionally. The same measures were ordered for the prefectures of Tokyo, Kyoto, and Okinawa on April 12. The “pre-emergency” mandate “allows prefectural leaders to request or order business owners to close at 8:00 p.m. and take other steps. It allows compensation for those who comply and fines for violators,” the Washington Post reported … [Read more...] about Poll: 76% of Japanese Think Government Not Doing Enough Against Coronavirus

School boards ‘blindsided’ as Ford government slashes program funding
The Ford government has cut millions in funding for programs that provide after-school jobs for needy teens, classroom tutors for kids, “student success” supports for racialized youth as well as a project focusing on Indigenous issues, the Star has learned. The province’s 72 school boards received emails late Friday with the list of programs to be cut or that will see funding reduced, and have been scrambling all weekend to figure out the financial impact, given the specialized grant money was promised by the previous Liberal government last March and may have already been spent. Not all boards necessarily run each of the axed programs, and it may take weeks before each is able to clarify how it will impact students. “I have serious concerns,” said Maria Rizzo, chair of the Toronto Catholic District School Board. “I’m sick to my stomach because I’m afraid of the steps that we’ve taken on poverty, on Indigenous education, and even in the Focus on Youth program – we’ve hired our … [Read more...] about School boards ‘blindsided’ as Ford government slashes program funding
Buhari, APC’s governance style pushed Twitter to locate Africa’s HQ in Ghana – PDP
Kindly Share This Story: By Dirisu Yakubu The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Wednesday claimed that the decision by Social network company, Twitter, to locate it’s African headquarters in Ghana is largely informed by what it called the misrule of President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress, APC. This is as the party noted that Twitter’s preference for Ghana over Nigeria “was occasioned by inconsistent economic policies, obnoxious suppression of free speech, stifling of online freedom and open internet by the Buhari administration and the APC.” In a statement signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, spokesman of the party, the PDP added that the development “is in addition to infrastructural decay, massive corruption and manifest failure of the Buhari Presidency and the APC to address the escalated insecurity brought upon our nation by their incompetent watch.” The statement further read: “Indeed the decision by Twitter to by-pass Nigeria to … [Read more...] about Buhari, APC’s governance style pushed Twitter to locate Africa’s HQ in Ghana – PDP
