UPDATE, 10:16 AM PT: Soledad O’Brien, appearing at a House subcommittee on disinformation, gave a simple solution to the spread of misinformation in mainstream media: Don’t book liars. “Cover the facts that lies and propaganda are being disseminated, but do not book people to lie on your show because it elevates and presents a lie as another side,” she said. She cited what Rand Corporation CEO Michael Rich has referred to as “truth decay,” or “the diminishing role of facts and analysis in public life.” “Media, disguised as journalism, has been spreading lies for years, elevating liars and using the ensuing slugfest to chase ratings, hits, subscriptions, advertisers,” she said. She said that a problem is a mentality that there are both sides even to established facts. Don’t Send Jeff Flake as Envoy to South Africa | Opinion
It would be alarming if Jeff Flake, once an apartheid South Africa praise singer, is appointed the next U.S. ambassador to South Africa. Recent reports suggest that Jeff Flake, the former Arizona Republican senator, may soon get a diplomatic appointment. Flake himself revealed he has been in touch with the Biden administration over the possibility of being appointed an ambassador. "I have an interest in making sure that President Biden's foreign policy is bipartisan," he told CNN . The political newswire Axios went further and specifically said Biden is reportedly considering Flake as ambassador to South Africa. If this happens, appointing the GOP "civility hero" would be viewed in South Africa as insensitive on the part of the Biden administration. Jeff Flake would probably be a good non-partisan ambassador for the United States wherever he may go—but not in South Africa. The United States has lost a lot of luster with a Trump foreign policy that culled experienced … [Read more...] about Don’t Send Jeff Flake as Envoy to South Africa | Opinion
How Nextdoor saved my family during the Texas deep freeze
I was delighted last Monday to wake up to a beautiful 6 inches of snow blanketing my world. After all these years, my two teenagers would finally experience a day of real winter in Austin, Texas. I imagined the fun ahead of us. Then I turned on my phone. My ex-husband, David, had texted at 2:30 a.m. to tell me that his power was out as part of planned rolling outages. I texted back, asking when his power had returned. His response: It was still out. This was just before 9 a.m., and the temperature was in the low teens. I started to worry. David lives on one side of a duplex. My 18-year-old daughter, Shoshana, lives on the other side with two housemates, a bearded dragon and a kitten. Two friends had also spent the night. The rolling outages had failed . They were supposed to last less than an hour to help keep the Texas power grid up and running. But once an outage kicked in, it lasted for days. Austin wasn't alone. A massive snowstorm and record-breaking cold hit Texas … [Read more...] about How Nextdoor saved my family during the Texas deep freeze

Inside Odeon as it prepares to reopen cinemas with no pick and mix or cash payments
STEPPING into an Odeon cinema and a waft of fresh popcorn hits my nose. It might still smell the same, but how different will cinemas look when they reopen their doors after lockdown? The Sun takes an exclusive first look inside an Odeon in Milton Keynes as it prepares to reopen with new social distancing rules, which include no pick and mix, cash payments and fewer seats. The cinema chain’s 120 venues have been shut since March 17, along with rivals Vue, Picturehouse and Cineworld. But Odeon has now confirmed it’ll reopen 10 of its cinemas on July 4 , with a further 88 set to welcome back customers by July 16. It comes after the government gave cinema chains the green light to reopen from early July, along with pubs, hotels and restaurants. I love going to the cinema - so I was excited to see how its changed. Inside the movie theatre there are restrictions on where you can sit, with every other row and at least three seats between households left unoccupied to … [Read more...] about Inside Odeon as it prepares to reopen cinemas with no pick and mix or cash payments
