Half of VW vehicles sold in China to be electric by 2030

Volkswagen, the namesake brand of the Volkswagen Group, expects half of its vehicles sold in China to be electric by 2030. This is part of Volkswagen's strategy, called Accelerate, unveiled late Friday, which also highlights software integration and digital experience as core competencies. China, which is the largest market for both the brand and the group, has been the world's largest market for electric cars and plug-in hybrids. There were 5.5 million such vehicles on its roads by the end of 2020, according to statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Last year, 2.85 million Volkswagen-branded vehicles were sold in China, accounting for 14 percent of total passenger vehicle sales in the country. Volkswagen now has three electric cars in the market, with another two built on its dedicated electric car platform to follow soon this year. The brand said it will unveil at least one electric vehicle every year to realize its new electrification goal. … [Read more...] about Half of VW vehicles sold in China to be electric by 2030

U.S. lawmakers propose giving USPS $6 billion for electric delivery vehicles

WASHINGTON: A group of 17 U.S. House of Representatives Democrats introduced legislation on Monday to provide $6 billion to the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to buy tens of thousands of additional electric delivery vehicles. Ohio-based electric-vehicle maker Workhorse Group Inc shares jumped 13% on prospects the company may be able to sell electric postal vehicles . Last month, it lost out when the USPS awarded a $482 million contact to Oshkosh Defense to finalize production for the next-generation postal vehicles. The bill sponsored by Representative Jared Huffman and seen by Reuters would require at least 75% of the new fleet be electric or zero-emission vehicles. If Congress approves funding, there is no guarantee the USPS would agree to buy vehicles from Workhorse. Last month, the USPS said it was committed to having electric vehicles make up 10% of its next-generation fleet as part of its multibillion-dollar plan to retire its 30-year-old delivery vehicles. It said it … [Read more...] about U.S. lawmakers propose giving USPS $6 billion for electric delivery vehicles

Why this AI engineer is using sci-fi to unpack tech’s biggest problems

advertisement advertisement advertisement S.B. Divya’s new science fiction thriller, Machinehood , is set in a not-too-distant future when people have access to tabletop biotech labs that churn out everything from cures for new diseases to performance-enhancing drugs. But they find that taking such drugs is all but mandatory as they compete for paying gig work in an economy where more and more jobs can be done by artificial intelligence. advertisement advertisement Before she was a published author, Divya was an engineer with a background in computational neuroscience and data science, as well as computing hardware and software. She talked to Fast Company about how her work has shaped her writing, the not-quite-dystopian world she envisions in Machinehood , and why she’s still optimistic about the future. The interview has been edited for length and clarity. How did your tech career inform your writing? I actually … [Read more...] about Why this AI engineer is using sci-fi to unpack tech’s biggest problems

Why a United Airlines plane’s engine exploded over Denver

The investigation into an engine explosion on a jetliner taking off from Denver is focusing on a fan blade that appeared to be weakened by wear and tear, a development reminiscent of a fatal failure on board another plane in 2018. These and other recent engine failures raise questions over long-held assumptions about how long fan blades last and whether they are being inspected often enough. A Boeing 777 operated by United Airlines had to make an emergency landing in Denver after one of its engines blew apart, spewing huge chunks of wreckage that landed in neighborhoods and sports fields. Passengers captured video of the crippled engine, wobbling and still on fire, as pilots made a safe return to the airport minutes after the plane bound for Hawaii took off. RELATED: PHOTOS: Debris from a United Airlines Boeing 777 rains down in Broomfield WHAT HAPPENED? Investigators said late Monday that two fan blades in the Pratt & Whitney engine broke off and one of them showed … [Read more...] about Why a United Airlines plane’s engine exploded over Denver

Modular battery swapping supercharges electric vehicles

Internal combustion engine (ICE) automobiles have a big advantage over EVs in one crucial area: Refueling occurs quickly, getting cars back on the road in a matter of minutes. But a new push for modular EV batteries could provide a solution, particularly in urban areas. A company called Ample has developed Modular Battery Swapping technology that it claims can deliver a full charge in under 10 minutes, significantly faster than traditional charging and nearly on par with ICE gas-ups. The technology is EV agnostic and designed to be deployed quickly in metropolitan areas. "Our system is designed for rapid deployment, making it possible to equip an entire metropolitan area with a ubiquitous network in a matter of weeks, while delivering energy at a cost as cheap as gasoline," Ample's CoFounders Khaled Hassounah and John de Souza write in a recent announcement. "Ample has the additional benefit of being able to capture wind and solar power when it's available, and then … [Read more...] about Modular battery swapping supercharges electric vehicles
