PHNOM PENH: Pakistan's lonely elephant Kaavan arrived in Cambodia by cargo plane on Monday (Nov 30) to start a new life with fellow pachyderms at a local sanctuary, the culmination of years of campaigning for his transfer by A wildlife caretaker feeds Kaavan. Cher was on the tarmac at the airport of Cambodia's second-biggest city Siem Reap to greet Kaavan and was photographed in sunglasses, black face mask and white jacket meeting the vets who accompanied the elephant, who made the long journey in a custom-made crate. Animal rescue organisation Four Paws said Kaavan had another 90 minute drive ahead and would likely arrive at the sanctuary after nightfall, so he would be released in daylight on Tuesday. "Kaavan was eating, was not stressed, he was even a little bit sleeping, standing leaning at the crate wall. He behaves like a Frequent Flyer," said Amir Khalil, a Four Paws vet. "The flight was uneventful, which is all you can ask for when you transfer an elephant." … [Read more...] about Kaavan, Pakistan’s lonesome elephant, starts new life in Cambodia

Sri Lanka digs moat around landfill to keep hungry elephants out
AMPARA, Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka's government is digging a moat around one of its landfills to keep hungry elephant herds out and reduce conflicts between the animals and villagers. Dozens of elephants lumber out of the forest daily into a rubbish dump near the eastern town of Ampara, rummaging through mounds of garbage for wilted vegetable scraps. This has become a common sight at the country's three largest landfills, which are located next to wildlife protection zones. The elephants consume plastic along with the food scraps, which slowly kills them, officials have said. In 2019, a record 361 elephants died mainly because of humans, local environmental groups reported. The Ampara landfill was created around a decade ago in the middle of an elephant corridor that is home to 200 to 300 elephants. Electric fences have not worked to keep the determined animals away. "There is no proper plan or a system for this," said PH Kumara, part of the Gal Oya farmers' committee, a farming … [Read more...] about Sri Lanka digs moat around landfill to keep hungry elephants out
Tokyo zoo unveils first elephant born there in 138 years
TOKYO: Japan's oldest zoo unveiled the first baby elephant to be born there since its founding more than a century ago, and asked the public for help in naming it. The male calf was shown to the public on Tuesday (Dec 1) for the first time since his Oct 31 birth at Tokyo's Ueno Zoological Gardens. His mother Authi and father Artid were gifted to Japan by Thailand in 2002 to celebrate the birth of Princess Aiko, the only daughter of Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako. The Ueno zoo, founded in 1882, has asked the public to vote online for the baby's name, choosing from candidates suggested by the Royal Thai Embassy in Tokyo. The choices are Arun, which means "dawn" in Thai, Atsadong (sunset), or Tawan (sun). The winning name will be announced on Dec 15. Viewings of the baby elephant and mother Authi, 22, are being limited to two hours a day for now to avoid stressing the animals. The baby was about 100cm tall and 120 kg at birth, but he has grown considerably … [Read more...] about Tokyo zoo unveils first elephant born there in 138 years
Arrow McLaren SP reveals dual liveries for 2021 IndyCar season
O’Ward, who completed his first full IndyCar season in 2020 and finished fourth in the championship, will run an updated version of the orange-and-black livery seen on both full-season cars last year, with team partner Arrow prominent on the black sidepods. However, the #7 car of new arrival Rosenqvist – entering his third IndyCar season and now with a win to his name – will run blue on the sidepods, in front of the cockpit and the front wings, with Vuse (digital vapor e-cigarettes) as the prominent sponsor. Last year, the #7 and #5 were distinguishable just by the former’s blue wing endplates. Speaking ahead of the public launch Friday morning, Rosenqvist said: “I think both cars look amazing – although I obviously think my one looks the best. “I really like how they kept it clean and pretty similar to last year but now you can separate the two cars. That’s something that the fans asked for and it’s also easier for our spotters, to relate to a specific car.” … [Read more...] about Arrow McLaren SP reveals dual liveries for 2021 IndyCar season
Three inmates, one nurse at Changi Prison tested positive for COVID-19 between April and May: SPS
SINGAPORE: Three inmates at Changi Prison and a staff nurse working there have tested positive for COVID-19 as of Friday (May 29). All four cases are unlinked, said the Singapore Prison Service (SPS) in a statement on Saturday morning, in response to queries from the media. "All three inmates were newly admitted inmates who were still undergoing cohort segregation when they tested positive for the virus following a swab test," said SPS. SPS also highlighted that the three inmates were in different cohorts and were tested as part of the admission process. In a later update on Saturday, SPS said that the three inmates were admitted to the prison on different days and that they were not with the general inmate population at any time. The first inmate tested positive on Apr 21, the second inmate on Apr 22, and the third inmate on May 9. Following confirmation of their positive results, the three inmates were isolated and put in a separate prison facility, away from the rest … [Read more...] about Three inmates, one nurse at Changi Prison tested positive for COVID-19 between April and May: SPS
The elephant in the room with changing NBA logo to Kobe Bryant
Kyrie Irving continues to push for the NBA to change its logo to Kobe Bryant. An online petition to change the logo to Bryant has more than 3 million signatures. What initially seemed like a coping mechanism/unrealistic idea in the aftermath of Bryant’s tragic and sudden death , the Kobe-logo movement has newfound momentum more than a year later. Supporters laud Bryant’s determination, work ethic and influence. Those qualities are absolutely part of Bryant’s legacy. But they’re only part of the story. Bryant – by his own admission – had sex with a woman who didn’t view it as consensual. I avoided mentioning that in my previous posts about changing the logo to Bryant. I just noted changing the logo didn’t seem like a good idea and moved on without much elaboration. I didn’t think it was worth relitigating his transgressions in this discussion, which I figured would fade quickly. But if this conversation is going to happen – and Irving, backed by millions of followers, … [Read more...] about The elephant in the room with changing NBA logo to Kobe Bryant
