For a decade, a former Wellington art gallery owner committed depraved sex acts on at-risk children, uploading his abuse online to a worldwide audience. It can now be revealed that Aaron Paul Laurence, 38, has pleaded guilty to more than 60 charges of abuse, including the rape of young boys and the production and distribution of footage of their ordeals. Details of Laurence's offending were suppressed until yesterday. When Laurence's stash of illicit child pornography was finally uncovered last year – hidden in a mire of computer encryptions and passwords – police found more than 31,000 images and videos. Many were homemade and detailed his horrific abuse of eight boys, aged between 8 and 13, across the lower North Island. During his appearance in Lower Hutt District Court yesterday, Laurence opposed The Dominion Post's application to photograph him. His lawyer, Louise Brown, said any photos could impact on his safety in prison and could affect his mother's deteriorating … [Read more...] about Paedophile posted abuse images online

A TikTok star claims he's been chatting online with Phillip Schofield for the last three years. Social media star Oli O'Toole, who has 74,000 followers on the app, claims he's been exchanging messages on Snapchat with the This Morning presenter, 59, since he was 17. He claims they chatted regularly until last year. Oli, from Manchester, decided to share snippets of the messages on TikTok as he lip-synced along to Miley Cyrus' song Ordinary Girl, which featured on her show Hannah Montana. He wrote on top of his video: "Me when people find out me and Phillip Schofield Snapchat x" and captioned it "i see the envy," as he shared it on TikTok. He added the hashtags "#foryou #funny #phillipschofield #snapchat #famous". It had been viewed almost 340,000 times and had 28,000 likes. Oli pointed to the messages, which date back to April 2017, as he mouthed the lyrics: "Wish that they could see that underneath I'm just an ordinary girl. "Sometimes I'm lazy. I get … [Read more...] about Phillip Schofield’s ‘three years of Snapchat messages with TikTok star, 21’
THEY are already the biggest band in the world – and now Coldplay have set their sights even higher. Literally. They unveiled the first single from their upcoming album tonight, but premiered the track live from the International Space Station. Chris Martin and bandmates Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland and Will Champion teamed up with French astronaut Thomas Pesquet for the out-of-this-world stunt, which saw a video of Higher Power beamed back to Earth by satellite. It is the first new music from their forthcoming ninth album — which I previously revealed is set to be called Music Of The Spheres , another reference to space and the planets. The upbeat anthemic tune was produced by pop supremo Max Martin, who has worked with the likes of Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys. It is a clear step back towards their trademark stadium bangers after 2019’s more reflective and politically inspired Everyday Life. Against a funky riff Chris sings: “I’m so happy that I’m … [Read more...] about Coldplay team up with astronaut to launch new single live from the International Space Station
The Epic Games v. Apple trial started on Monday, and if you wanted to follow along and listen to Epic CEO Tim Sweeney talk about the “ metaverse ,” your options were limited. In theory, there’s public access to the trial, like most court proceedings, but since the courthouse is still closed for lockdown, the only access was through the court’s teleconference line that was briefly overrun by screaming teens . But for anyone looking for more user-friendly options, there’s good news. A surprising, small community of streamers has decided to rebroadcast the trial on streaming platforms — places built for the people who play Fortnite rather than the antitrust policy wonks in the courtroom. For yesterday’s proceeding, I found a handful of YouTube channels and streamers rebroadcasting the hearing online, including Geoff Keighley (gaming’s Ryan Seacrest) on the Game Awards YouTube channel. Keighley’s YouTube stream sat at around 1,000 viewers throughout Monday’s events, featuring an … [Read more...] about I watched the Epic v. Apple trial on Discord
Photo: FRQNCY The live-performance business has long been a powerful economic engine for many, many kinds of artists. This is as true for musicians in the streaming age as it is for comedians and, yes, podcasters . (Let’s set theater aside for this discussion. Different bag altogether.) The pandemic, of course, brought live performances to a halt, pushing the business to a cascade of Zoom calls and, to some extent, underground . I can’t speak for everyone, obviously, but my sense is that success in such efforts has mostly been modest at best, chiefly functioning as marginal stop-gap measures as opposed to true virtual adaptations. As the United States inches towards relative normalcy — though within a global context that remains tenuous — the live-performance business in the country appears to be gingerly preparing for the light at the end of the tunnel. Bands are announcing dates again. Some venues are starting to hold very small, socially distant performances. Music … [Read more...] about Are Podcasts Ready For Live Events Again?
