New 3km walking trail at Singapore Sports Hub showcases Kallang’s rich history

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Sports Hub on Sunday (May 12) launched a new educational trail showcasing the rich history of Kallang, as well as art and sporting achievements, as part of the Singapore Bicentennial commemoration. Titled The Kallang Story: A Sports, Arts and Heritage Trail, the trail features 18 heritage markers, artefacts, architecture and new artworks sited around the Singapore Sports Hub. According to a press release, members of the public can explore all 18 markers together or in three separate smaller walking trails - The Waterfront Trail, The Stadium Trail and The Park Trail. "Each of the trails tells the Kallang story by highlighting prominent landmarks in the area, both past and present," the release stated. The Waterfront Trail faces the Kallang Basin, a body of water with a rich history going back at least 400 years and reveals the riverine communities who once called the area home, the traditional industries that contributed lasting place … [Read more...] about New 3km walking trail at Singapore Sports Hub showcases Kallang’s rich history

Families rocked by unthinkable mix-up in wake of Humboldt Broncos bus crash

EDMONTON—Parker Tobin’s family sat at the bedside of an injured hockey player for two days before they learned he wasn’t their son. Doctors told the family the boy lying in the hospital bed next to them had a long list of injuries, but a surgery to put pins in his spine went well. He wasn’t able to speak, still under heavy sedation while being treated. On Sunday night, the Tobins learned the boy they had been keeping vigil for wasn’t Parker — it was Xavier Labelle, an 18-year-old teammate from Saskatoon. Parker had died in the crash. On Friday, after hearing that a truck collided with the bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team, Tobin’s grandfather Ron Clark said Parker’s parents were left wondering if their 18-year-old son had made it out alive. “They didn’t know where he was, they couldn’t get a hold of him,” said Clark in a phone interview with StarMetro on Sunday, before the misidentification was discovered. Clark said Parker’s parents and brother flew to … [Read more...] about Families rocked by unthinkable mix-up in wake of Humboldt Broncos bus crash

These Are the Youngest and Oldest Presidents in U.S. History

When President Joe Biden was sworn into office on Jan. 20, 2021, he became the oldest person in U.S. history to assume the presidency. Though the U.S. president holds the highest, most powerful office in the world, the Founding Fathers laid out very few requirements for someone to win the job. To become President of the United States, you must be a natural-born citizen (not a naturalized immigrant) who has lived here for 14 years and is at least 35 years old. There are no experience requirements, as evidenced by the fact that President Trump and several other presidents from the 1800s didn't hold political office before taking the White House. It's unclear exactly why the founders set 35 as the minimum age limit—some historians think it was to avoid foreign influence in the executive or to keep families from creating huge political dynasties. However, with the 2020 election just around the corner, a new question has emerged: can someone be too old to run for president? … [Read more...] about These Are the Youngest and Oldest Presidents in U.S. History

Are you getting more forgetful? How to tell if it’s a sign of early dementia

Have you ever walked into the kitchen to get something but forgot what it was you needed? What about the times you couldn’t recall where you’d placed your keys? Or you’re at the gym but you’ve forgotten to bring your workout gear – again. More detrimentally, were there occasions when your mind drew a blank when your boss asked for some crucial numbers at a meeting? READ: Nearly 3 in 4 persons with dementia in Singapore feel ashamed, rejected: Study If there are quite a few times when you find yourself saying “yes”, you might have entertained the thought that maybe, just maybe, you might be developing dementia. But are you? It's a particularly salient question, considering September is World Alzheimer's Month. “The answer is no,” said Dr Ng Li-Ling, vice president of Alzheimer’s Disease Association (ADA) in Singapore. “Most people forget little things every day, like people’s names or where we’ve placed our keys. New app allows the elderly with dementia and their caregivers to go on a trip down memory lane

SINGAPORE - Caregivers can now access an app which can help in interacting with elderly dementia patients. Launched on Monday (Sept 28) by Singapore's National Heritage Board (NHB), National Museums Liverpool and the British Council, the local version of the digital application contains multimedia features and images of relatable everyday items from Singapore's yesteryear. Originally launched in the United Kingdom in 2014, the My House of Memories application has also been adapted for users in the United States. Similar to a digital scrapbook, it draws on the power of familiar items - from the 1930s to the 1990s - to evoke memory and help users share personal stories with their caregivers. The items featured in the local version of the app include 100 objects from Singapore's National Collection and 11 additional objects from the Alzheimer's Disease Association. They include the Setron television set, the first locally manufactured black-and-white TV set in 1964, as well as a … [Read more...] about New app allows the elderly with dementia and their caregivers to go on a trip down memory lane

‘The Marshall Plan For Moms:’ Effort Aims To Help Women Achieved Equal Pay

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – If a man and woman doing the same job collect their paycheck each week, the woman’s salary actually ends on October 15th. That is the finding of a new study comparing men’s and women’s salaries from Business.Org. The study says in Pennsylvania women’s salaries lag behind men by 21% or 32nd in the country. READ MORE: Police And Firefighters Respond To Car On Fire In Homewood “Yes, there has been progress, but that progress is minimal and we still have a long way to go,” says YWCA Executive Director Angela Reynolds. During Women’s History Month Reynolds says it’s important to know, “While the numbers have been getting better over time they’re still hovering generally between 81 and 87 cents on the comparison dollar. The other piece I think is important is that if you look at Black women that number is actually closer to 62 cents per men’s dollar, and in Pennsylvania for black women is 54 cents per dollar so all of those numbers need to be taken in … [Read more...] about ‘The Marshall Plan For Moms:’ Effort Aims To Help Women Achieved Equal Pay
