We need to be alert from the start against Lazio- Bayern’s Flick

MUNICH, Germany: Bayern Munich will be alert from the start of their Champions League last 16 first leg at Lazio on Tuesday to avoid the mistakes they made in their recent two Bundesliga games, coach Hansi Flick said on Monday. Bayern have won six titles in the past nine months but have stumbled in their last two league matches with a 3-3 draw against visiting Arminia Bielefeld and a 2-1 defeat on Saturday by Eintracht Frankfurt. Both times Bayern fell two goals behind and had to battle their way back into the game, as has so often been the case this season. "We know what has happened in the past days," Flick said on the two matches last week. "Against Lazio I want us to be there as a team from the start. "We have an idea of how we want to play and we have to do that from the start." Flick, who is missing several key players to injury or COVID-19 infections including Corentin Tolisso and Thomas Mueller, needs some good news after seeing a seven-point lead in the … [Read more...] about We need to be alert from the start against Lazio- Bayern’s Flick

Football: Bayern edge PSG 1-0 to claim Champions League

LISBON: Bayern Munich were crowned European champions for the sixth time by beating Paris St Germain 1-0 thanks to a second-half header from former PSG youth academy graduate Kingsley Coman in an absorbing Champions League final on Sunday (Aug 23). France international Coman appeared at the back post to score the decisive goal in the 59th minute as Bayern became the first team to lift the Champions League with a 100% record. The victory, deserved after a dogged display once Bayern got in front, secured a second treble for the Germans, the Bundesliga and German Cup winners, and completed a remarkable first season for coach Hansi Flick. Flick took over a struggling side in November, after a 5-1 hammering by Eintracht Frankfurt led to the sacking of Niko Kovac with the club fourth in the Bundesliga. "It feels fantastic, we have a long journey behind us," said Bayern midfielder Thomas Mueller. "We came from very low, at least that is what it felt like, in the autumn and put in … [Read more...] about Football: Bayern edge PSG 1-0 to claim Champions League

Football: Leipzig power past Hertha to close in on leaders Bayern

BERLIN: RB Leipzig eased past Hertha Berlin 3-0 on Sunday (Feb 21) to cut the gap with leaders Bayern Munich to two points with their fourth consecutive Bundesliga victory. Marcel Sabitzer put the visitors in front in the 28th minute with a ferocious shot from 30 metres that went straight into the top corner with Hertha goalkeeper Rune Jarstein frozen to the spot on a sunny afternoon in the capital. Nordi Mukiele then took advantage of a mistake by Hertha's Matteo Guendouzi in the box to drill the ball in and double their lead in the 71st. Leipzig, who lost 2-0 to Liverpool in their Champions League round-of-16 first leg on Tuesday, were initially on the back foot with Hertha missing several good chances before Sabitzer's goal against the run of play. They then survived late pressure from Hertha with keeper Peter Gulacsi coming to the rescue twice before Willi Orban headed in Leipzig's third goal in the 84th to seal the win. The Saxony club are in second place on 47 points, … [Read more...] about Football: Leipzig power past Hertha to close in on leaders Bayern

Football: Bayern Munich crash 2-1 at Frankfurt in Bundesliga

BERLIN: Bayern Munich crashed to a 2-1 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday (Feb 20) in the Bundesliga as the world champions showed chinks in their armour before they return to Champions League action next week. Robert Lewandowski netted his 26th league goal this season for Bayern, but Frankfurt deserved the win thanks to first-half goals by Japan midfielder Daichi Kamada and Amin Younes. After their 3-3 league draw at home to strugglers Armina Bielefeld last Monday, Bayern again wobbled ahead of Tuesday's Champions League first leg tie at Lazio. Frankfurt's win gives hope to Bayern's league rivals as second-placed RB Leipzig can cut Bayern's lead to two points if they win at Hertha Berlin on Sunday. It was Bayern's third league defeat. Their last, a 3-2 reverse at Borussia Moenchengladbach in January was followed by a shock German Cup defeat at second-tier Holstein Kiel. In a sign of Bayern's domestic dominance, it was only the sixth defeat head coach Hansi Flick has … [Read more...] about Football: Bayern Munich crash 2-1 at Frankfurt in Bundesliga

Football: Bayern stage two-goal comeback to rescue point against Bielefeld

MUNICH, Germany: Hosts Bayern Munich had to battle back from two goals down to rescue a 3-3 draw against strugglers Arminia Bielefeld on Monday and had their lead at the top of the Bundesliga cut to five points. Four days after lifting the Club World Cup for a sixth title in less than nine months, Bayern crashed back to Bundesliga reality with Arminia racing to a 2-0 lead in the first half. The visitors stunned Bayern with a goal in the ninth minute when Michel Vlap latched onto a pass, pivoted and beat keeper Manuel Neuer with a well-placed shot. Bielefeld doubled their advantage in the 37th with unmarked Amos Pieper's powerful header from a corner and Bayern struggling in heavy snowfall. Bayern, who had won eight of their nine previous league games, shot out of the blocks after the restart and Leroy Sane hit the post before Robert Lewandowski, with his back to the goal, turned quickly and volleyed in his 25th goal of the campaign in the 48th minute. With former Bayern … [Read more...] about Football: Bayern stage two-goal comeback to rescue point against Bielefeld
