The Bank of England wants banks, which account for around half of car finance deals, to increase their reserves just in case the glut of new cars on the roads triggers a collapse in secondhand car prices. Bank officials have calculated the losses that would result from a 20% fall in the secondhand market and deemed the industry to be safe.
