LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s stunning interview with Oprah has shined a bright light on mental health and how people can reach out and get the help and support they need. Los Angeles-based psychotherapist Dr. John Tsilimparis said he was impressed with the couple’s awareness that they needed help but weren’t getting it, forcing them to step back from the British royal family. Report: Kobe, Rondo, Pierce fined for skipping All-Star events
When it became clear that Kobe Bryant was not going to show to the media availability session on Friday of All-Star weekend he knew what that meant — he was getting fined. Controversy erupts in US over vaccines
The US coronavirus vaccine landscape was upset by controversy over the weekend as a group in Los Angeles disrupted a vaccination site, while the Pentagon walked back a plan to vaccinate detainees at Guantanamo Bay, including the alleged mastermind of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In California, at a vaccination site Saturday outside Dodger Stadium, anti-vaccination protesters carried signs that read "Save your soul, turn back now," "Recall Gavin Newsom", and "Take off your mask". "Unbelievable. If you don't want the vaccine fine, but there are millions of Angelenos that do. 16,000 of your neighbors have died, so get out of the way," Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez tweeted Saturday. As of Sunday, California had 3,243,348 confirmed coronavirus cases and 40,697 COVID-19 deaths, according to the state health department. Hard-hit Los Angeles County had 1,116,892 cases and 16,770 deaths as of Sunday, according to the county health department website. How Guns N’ Roses Formed
Guns N’ Roses did not arrive fully formed on L.A.’s Sunset Strip, howling “Sweet Child o’ Mine” with all the might and charisma that made the song a hit in 1988. They only achieved the proper cocktail of sensitivity and machismo after the five musicians in GN’R’s classic lineup found each other in the mid-Eighties. Long before any of them had even dreamt of the songs on Appetite for Destruction, Indiana natives Axl Rose and guitarist Izzy Stradlin were cutting their teeth in the bands Axl, Hollywood Rose, and L.A. Guns. Eventually, they united with guitarist Slash , bassist Duff McKagan , and drummer Steven Adler under the GN’R banner and made history, but it was a long road to get there. The thing the musicians remember most about their salad days now is the determination they had simply to book small gigs at the Troubadour and Gazzari’s. Related How 'Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?' ‘I’m training twice as hard now’: Black double amputee runner Blake Leeper hits a hurdle in pursuit of his Olympic dream
Eight years ago, Blake Leeper ran in the Paralympics against Oscar Pistorius, the original Blade Runner, thinking that one day he would do everything Pistorius had done on the track, and then some. By the end of last year, Leeper, 31, was getting very close. His best times for the 400 metres were more than a half-second faster than Pistorius’ best. He finished fifth at the 2019 U.S. track and field championships, running a time that put him within reach of a spot on the 2020 Olympic team, at the very least as a member of the 400 relay squad. Off the track, though, unexpected headwinds were gaining momentum. Officials with World Athletics, track and field’s global governing body, had ordered him to prove that his carbon-fibre blades did not give him an unfair advantage over able-bodied athletes — a battle that disabled athletes assumed they had won with Pistorius more than a decade ago. On Monday, the headwinds turned fierce, as the world’s top sports court ruled that Leeper’s … [Read more...] about ‘I’m training twice as hard now’: Black double amputee runner Blake Leeper hits a hurdle in pursuit of his Olympic dream
