Covid-19: PM Jacinda Ardern will be publicly vaccinated prior to general population

Breakfast The Prime Minister last week urged Kiwis to call out family or work colleagues not following the rules. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will publicly receive the Covid-19 vaccine before the general population in a bid to prove its long-term safety. Ardern, speaking to the AM Show on Monday, said she would receive the vaccine before the middle of 2021, when officials expect to be inoculating the public. “I'll do it publicly and for those interested they can watch it. I've been really mindful of not taking a vaccine from someone else who it's really critical for ... There are people who are at risk and I'm not one of them. “I do want to demonstrate that it's not only safe to take at the time but long term it's safe, and so I will do it early on ... before we start the mass rollout.” READ MORE: Travel bubble gamechanger: Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern delivers huge boost for chances of Australia travel bubble Covid-19: Controlling the vaccine campaign … [Read more...] about Covid-19: PM Jacinda Ardern will be publicly vaccinated prior to general population

Wasps: The Astonishing Diversity of a Misunderstood Insect

Source: Egor Kamelev, Pexels free download. Last year essay I posted an essay called Some Truths About the Fascinating Lives of Wasps published in New Scientist by Richard Jones called "Not so Waspish," with the subtitle "They are one of the least-loved animals, but wasps deserve our affection. It's time for a rebranding." The online version is  titled " Wasps may benefit us as much as bees. Could we learn to love them? " with the subtitle "We love to hate wasps, but they pollinate flowers, kill off pests and their venom might even help us treat cancer." 1 I learned a lot about wasps from Jones' essay and the references he provides, and wanted to learn more about these misunderstood insects. So, I was pleased to read a book called Wasps: The Astonishing Diversity of a Misunderstood Insect by Eric R. Eaton, a writer, editor, and consultant who has worked as an entomologist for many institutions. 2 Here's what he had to say about his highly informative and … [Read more...] about Wasps: The Astonishing Diversity of a Misunderstood Insect

A New Neurosurgical Procedure May Help Treat PTSD

Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder ( PTSD ) can be severe and disabling. Although some individuals with this disorder respond to psychotherapy and/or pharmacotherapy, many with chronic, treatment-resistant symptoms do not. Results from neuroimaging studies indicate that there is increased activation of a brain region called the amygdala in individuals with PTSD. Hyperactivity of this region is predictive of treatment-resistant symptoms. In addition, there is some evidence that chronic PTSD may increase the risk of developing epilepsy later in life. Some individuals with treatment-resistant epilepsy have seizures that arise in the amygdala and hippocampus, key structures in the medial temporal lobe of the brain. In such patients, a neurosurgical procedure involving focused removal of a portion of the right amygdala and right hippocampus can decrease or eliminate seizures that originate in these locations. Targeting this specific region can be very accurate thanks to … [Read more...] about A New Neurosurgical Procedure May Help Treat PTSD

America Needs Smart Supply Chains—Not Isolationism | Opinion

It's not often a president dedicates one of their first executive orders to supply chains. Recently, Biden made history by reminding Americans that supply chain security is national security. The pandemic has shown that when it comes to semiconductors, personal protective equipment or vaccines, America's supply is vulnerable. The isolationism President Joe Biden is calling for, saying, " We shouldn't have to rely on a foreign country ," has its limits. We can't build a "fortress America" to eliminate foreign supply chains risks. We can reduce risks, while maintaining the benefits of global trade, by making our supply chains smarter. Investing in global, tech and AI-enabled supply chains can allow Americans to get what they need from around the world, while being able to predict the unpredictable (like a pandemic). Last year the U.S. realized the vulnerability of supply chains. It started with empty shelves when Americans went shopping for toilet paper and groceries. It … [Read more...] about America Needs Smart Supply Chains—Not Isolationism | Opinion
