How to rethink Russia sanctions
Since 2012, Russia has become subject of ever more Western sanctions. Some have been unilateral U.S. sanctions, while Western allies have joined in others. Currently, the United States has about 15 different sanctions programs for Russia, and several others have been proposed. Sensibly, the Biden administration has called for a review of U.S. Russia sanctions. Sanctions should be effective. They should deter, punish and hopefully reverse bad behavior. Narrowly targeted and clearly defined sanctions are usually more effective than broad sanctions that, for example, aim at regime change. The more countries that participate, the more effective sanctions tend to be. Therefore, the Biden administration is right in its intent to return to far-reaching coordination with European allies in its Russia sanctions. The first American sanctions on Russia after the Cold War was the Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act of 2012. It targets violators of human rights and corruption in … [Read more...] about How to rethink Russia sanctions
Turkey Questions Employees of Saudi Consulate on Khashoggi
ANKARA - Turkish prosecutors investigating the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi questioned Turkish employees of the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Friday, widening the hunt for clues in a case straining Riyadh's alliance with Western powers. Khashoggi went missing more than two weeks ago after entering the consulate to obtain documents in relation to a forthcoming marriage. Turkish officials believe he was killed in the building on October 2, but Riyadh has denied the allegations. In an expanding quest for evidence, police searched a forest on Istanbul's outskirts and a city near the Sea of Marmara for Khashoggi's remains, two senior Turkish officials told Reuters, after tracking the routes of cars that left the Saudi consulate and the consul's residence on the day he vanished. Investigators have recovered samples from searches of both buildings which it will analyze for traces of Khashoggi's DNA. State-run Anadolu news agency said the Turkish prosecutor's … [Read more...] about Turkey Questions Employees of Saudi Consulate on Khashoggi
Biden Orders Extensive 100-Day Review of Critical American Supply Chains
President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Wednesday that required an extensive review of critical American supply chains, with a special focus on semiconductors, to “ensure our economic prosperity and national security.” The executive order requires the Secretary of Commerce to ”submit a report identifying risks in the semiconductor manufacturing and advanced packaging supply chains and policy recommendations to address these risks” by June 4. The White House explained the order’s focus on semiconductors in a fact sheet : “The United States is the birthplace of this technology, and has always been a leader in semiconductor development. However, over the years we have underinvested in production—hurting our innovative edge—while other countries have learned from our example and increased their investments in the industry.“ Relying on chips produced elsewhere also threatens various aspects of the U.S. economy and national security. The semiconductor shortage has … [Read more...] about Biden Orders Extensive 100-Day Review of Critical American Supply Chains
Hopes rising for millions of drivers fuel duty might NOT rise in Budget after Sun’s Keep It Down campaign
HOPES are rising for millions of drivers that fuel duty might NOT rise in next week's Budget following The Sun's Keep It Down campaign. Mr Sunak is under pressure to keep the freeze on fuel duty rises as he searches for ways to fill his Covid black hole. Pleas not to hike fuel duty — backed by The Sun’s Keep It Down crusade — come as a new eco-petrol is sanctioned for use at UK pumps. Ministers signed off plans for E10 — a mix of petrol and ethanol made from materials including grains, sugars and waste wood — from September. The cut in emissions will be like taking 350,000 cars off our roads. Hopes of Rishi keeping fuel duty down come after The Sun revealed how more than two dozen Tory MPs have written to him urging him not to raise fuel tax in his Budget. They say Boris Johnson made a pledge in 2019 not to increase the hated levy and breaking the vow would betray voters. The 26 Conservatives - including former ministers Tracey Crouch, Esther McVey , … [Read more...] about Hopes rising for millions of drivers fuel duty might NOT rise in Budget after Sun’s Keep It Down campaign
