Indonesian students win award for plan to clean up Citarum River
The water of the Citarum River, in many places, is nowhere to be seen, as the surface of the river is hidden by mountains of plastic, garbage and dead animals. But there may still be hope for the longest river in West Java. Four girls have come up with a project they think could help save the Citarum. The British International Education Association, a UK-based nonprofit, focused its STEM competition this year on saving the world’s shores from plastic pollution. A team of four girls from British School Jakarta came away from the competition with a Rising Star Award for their design to address plastic pollution in the Citarum. The girls and their educators hope other young people will learn from their project that environmental issues must be solved through collaboration. Ines Indira, 14, came across the BIEA STEM competition last year and was intrigued. This year, she helped to form a team with three other girls at BSJ -- 14-year-olds Aliyah Azlan, Caitlyn Limbert and Chiara … [Read more...] about Indonesian students win award for plan to clean up Citarum River
Massive Rangitata River restoration programme to commence
Major protection of the Rangitata River is on the cards, with a “jobs for nature” restoration project being approved in principle, and a multi-agency group working on further projects Department of Conservation (DOC) director general Lou Sanson said in a social media post on Monday that the jobs for nature project will include fencing 110 kilometres of riverbed and wetlands, planting 116,000 native plants on riparian margins, trapping sediment, and protecting braided river birds such as the wrybill, black billed gulls, black stilt/kaki and black-fronted tern. The work would employ up to 86 people over the four years according to the post which also said it was “part of DOC’s new multi-agency $20m partnership”. “The programme is our flagship restoration of a Canterbury braided river ecosystem,” Sanson said. Tsilhqot’in National Government appeals Gibraltar Mines’ discharge into Fraser River
A permit authorizing the use of the Fraser River for dilution of mine effluent is being challenged by the Tsilhqot’in National Government (TNG). The TNG will be participating in a virtual Environmental Appeal Board hearing next week on behalf of the ʔEsdilagh First Nation, which is located along both sides of the Fraser River between Williams Lake and Quesnel. “The fact that the province of B.C. is permitting Gibraltar Mines Ltd. to use the Fraser River as a dumping ground for its tailings effluent is absolutely appalling,” ʔEsdilagh First Nation Chief Troy Baptiste said in a news release March 8. The untreated mine effluent is set to be discharged via a pipe into the river four kilometers downstream from the community at Alexandria and near what the nation considers as vital fishing sites at a rate of 285 litres per second beginning April 10. Brian Battison, Taseko Mines Ltd. vice president of corporate affairs, said Monday, March 8, the mining company had no comment. … [Read more...] about Tsilhqot’in National Government appeals Gibraltar Mines’ discharge into Fraser River
NPFL: Rivers Utd maintain perfect home record with 2-0 win over Jigawa GS
Kindly Share This Story: Rivers United put up a good performance to beat Jigawa Golden Stars 2-0 to maintain their 100 per cent win record at home in one of the MatchDay 14 of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt on Sunday. Desperate to get back to winning ways after three matchdays (two defeats and a draw), Rivers United were all over their opponents in the opening moments as they controlled the tempo of the game, creating chances but were unfortunate in the final third. Their pressure finally yielded result in the 17th minute when Konan Ruffin sent a delightful cross into the box which was totally missed by Jigawa’s goalkeeper Sochima Victor. An unmarked Goodwin Aguda was at the far post and he gratefully headed in the ball into an empty net for the opener. The Tide Is High–and Getting Higher
Living near the ocean is a dream for many people. But in recent years, the effects of climate change have made it a dicey proposition. Hurricanes have become more intense , leading to bigger storm surges and heavier rainfall that pound coastlines, erode beaches, and destroy homes. That storm threat has been compounded by so-called nuisance flooding that occurs during high tides, even during calm weather and clear skies. A new study shows that nuisance flooding is exacerbated by dredging and the construction of piers and jetties that were intended to make coastal living easier but are in fact redirecting the flow of incoming ocean water and making high tides higher than ever before. Published Friday in the journal Science Advances , the study compared high and low tide ranges measured during the past 70 years with an older database of historic tidal measurements made in the mid-1800s and recently found in stacks of old boxes stored in an annex of the National Archives in … [Read more...] about The Tide Is High–and Getting Higher
