The Burden of Community Violence

Source: Serge van Neck/Unsplash On Wednesday, Feb 17, 2021, eight people were injured in a mass shooting that took place in broad daylight at the mass transportation hub in my neighborhood. It happened at the station where my family and I would normally take the subway to go downtown. Fortunately, my loved ones and I were not there at the time, but we could easily have been. This particular shooting has had an especially rattling effect on me because I have lived through too many similar events. In August 2019, five people were gunned down in broad daylight during a drive-by shooting two blocks from my home. In June 2019, I was in a subway when a gunfight broke out in the next train car. In September 2018, I was at home one evening when a three-way gun battle took place right outside my house. When the police arrived, they sealed us inside our home and I watched from a window as they counted over 40 bullets. In addition, along the paths I walk to the subway and supermarket are … [Read more...] about The Burden of Community Violence

First two community vaccination centres cater to elderly, with larger booths for wheelchairs

SINGAPORE - The first two community vaccination centres in Singapore differ slightly from others, such as those in Changi Airport Terminal 4 and Raffles City Convention Centre, as they cater to elderly residents. Seniors have been prioritised in the nationwide vaccination campaign, and Tanjong Pagar and Ang Mo Kio were selected as the pilot sites, as there are larger numbers of them residing in those towns. The centres' elderly friendly features include bigger booths to accommodate wheelchairs, and chairs with armrests, said Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing at Tanjong Pagar Community Club on Tuesday (Jan 26). "There's an express lane for people who are not so mobile, who come in wheelchairs, so that they don't have to wait too long," he said. He added that the size of the booths in which the vaccines are administered is also slightly bigger than the ones at existing facilities such as at the airport, so that people in wheelchairs can move in and out without … [Read more...] about First two community vaccination centres cater to elderly, with larger booths for wheelchairs

Singapore Expo being prepared to house COVID-19 patients who have recovered but may still be infectious: Gan Kim Yong

SINGAPORE: Singapore Expo is being prepared to function as a "community care facility" for COVID-19 patients who have "more or less recovered" but may still be infectious, said Health Minister Gan Kim Yong on Sunday (Apr 5). Responding to a question during a press conference held by the multi-ministry task force tackling the COVID-19 outbreak, Mr Gan said that such "community care facilities" will ensure the patients "continue to be cared for until they are cleared of the virus", after which they may return home and to the community. Such facilities can also ensure there is sufficient capacity in hospitals for those that require acute care, the minister added.
