Canada attacks Trump’s plan to deploy troops at joint border

OTTAWA: Canada on Thursday (Mar 26) attacked a US proposal to deploy troops along the undefended joint border to help fight the spread of coronavirus, saying the idea was unnecessary and would damage relations. The uncompromising comments came as a surprise, since Ottawa has enjoyed smooth relations with the administration of US President Donald Trump over the past 18 months. Last week, the two nations agreed to close the border to non-essential travel to ease the strain on health systems from the outbreak. Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, however, made clear the Liberal government had no time for a plan to send hundreds of troops to the border to help boost security. "Canada is strongly opposed to this US proposal and we have made that opposition very, very clear ... this is an entirely unnecessary step which we would view as damaging to our relationship," Freeland told a news conference. "The public health situation does not require such action," she … [Read more...] about Canada attacks Trump’s plan to deploy troops at joint border

Top US envoy presses Canada over Huawei role in 5G network – officials

WASHINGTON: A senior U.S. envoy on Monday pressed Canada about Ottawa's forthcoming decision on whether to allow China's Huawei Technologies to take part in its 5G network, a move Washington opposes, officials said. The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump last year warned Canada it could lose access to top secret intelligence unless it blocked Huawei 5G technology. Robert Blair, Trump's special representative for international telecoms policy, discussed the "importance of a secure and reliable next-generation telecommunications infrastructure" and the defense partnership between the United States and Canada, the U.S. embassy said in a statement. Speaking ahead of the meeting, two U.S. sources said Blair planned to underscore that a decision by Canada to include Huawei could jeopardize its access to U.S. intelligence. The White House has accused Huawei of being able to spy on customers and maintaining close ties to the Chinese government, allegations Huawei denies. … [Read more...] about Top US envoy presses Canada over Huawei role in 5G network – officials

Uber suspends pooled rides in US and Canada to limit spread of COVID-19

SAN FRANCISCO: Uber on Tuesday (Mar 17) began suspending shared rides on its ride-hailing platform in the United States and Canada to limit the spread of the coronavirus. The pooled option, which allows riders to book trips at lower prices by sharing the car with up to three other passengers traveling in the same direction, has been disabled for users opening the apps in the two countries. "Our goal is to help flatten the curve on community spread in the cities we serve," senior vice president Uber Rides and Platform Andrew Macdonald said in a statement. A spokesman said similar steps outside the US and Canada would be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Regular rides and the company's food delivery platform Uber Eats remain available, but Uber said it was in contact with local authorities to adjust operations as needed. Canada, US farms face crop losses due to foreign worker delays

WINNIPEG, Manitoba/CHICAGO: Mandatory coronavirus quarantines of seasonal foreign workers in Canada could hurt that country's fruit and vegetable output this year, and travel problems related to the pandemic could also leave US farmers with fewer workers than usual. Foreign labour is critical to farm production in both countries, where domestic workers shun the hard physical labour and low pay. In Canada, where farms rely on 60,000 temporary foreign workers, their arrivals are delayed by initial border restrictions and grounded flights. Once they arrive, the federal government requires them to be isolated for 14 days with pay, unable to work. In the United States, nearly 250,000 foreign guest workers, mostly from Mexico, help harvest fruit and vegetables each year. The State Department is processing H-2A visas for farm workers with reduced staffing, though some companies are still having a hard time getting workers in on time. Ontario farmer Mike Chromczak said he was afraid … [Read more...] about Canada, US farms face crop losses due to foreign worker delays

Here is how Canada can improve its policy to help Hong Kongers

In November 2019, I came to Ottawa after the tragic sieges of universities in Hong Kong and unprecedented landslide victory in the District Council Election. I did not expect that a year and a half later I would be addressing the Canadian Parliament encouraging it to help the most vulnerable protesters to escape and find refuge. Since the National Security Law’s introduction, more than 100 Hong Kong residents have been arrested. Most recently, 47 prominent political figures from all political spectrums were charged with “subversion of the state” simply because they participated in the democratic primaries aimed at securing more seats in the legislature. All the arrestees face between 10 years and life in prison and the possibility of extradition to China . As Beijing tightens its grip, more protesters face the stark choice of staying and facing likely arrest or attempting to escape. As a student activist I, too, faced this painful choice, and as a result of my dual-nationality, … [Read more...] about Here is how Canada can improve its policy to help Hong Kongers
