LOS ANGELES (AFP) - A damning report into US gymnastics' sex abuse scandal lambasted the United States Olympic Committee on Monday (Dec 10), saying the body had helped create the environment which allowed former team doctor Larry Nassar to abuse hundreds of athletes . The 233-page report said senior Usoc executives had failed to react swiftly when first warned of allegations surrounding Nassar in 2015, instead concealing the doctor's crimes until the scandal erupted into public view in late 2016. Investigators hired by Usoc to conduct a wide-ranging inquiry into the scandal said former Usoc chief executive Scott Blackmun, and current Usoc chief of sports performance Alan Ashley, were both guilty of inaction after first being told of abuse allegations. The report, carried out by Boston law firm Ropes & Gray, painted a withering picture of a systemic failure which allowed Nassar to abuse hundreds of athletes. Nassar was jailed for life earlier this year for the abuse of … [Read more...] about Gymnastics: US Olympic Committee slammed in review of Larry Nassar sex abuse case

Gymnastics: Michigan State to pay US$500m to Larry Nassar sex abuse victims
NEW YORK (REUTERS) - Hundreds of women sexually abused by disgraced gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar have tentatively agreed to a US$500 million (S$670 million) settlement with Michigan State University, Nassar's former employer, attorneys for both sides said on Wednesday (May 17). The deal calls for the school to pay US$425 million to the 332 victims represented in current litigation, with another US$75 million set aside in a trust fund that could go to future plaintiffs who allege they were abused by Nassar, the attorneys said in a joint statement. The sexual abuse settlement appears to be one of the largest of its kind, reflecting the sheer number of victims, including well-known athletes such as 2012 Olympic gold medalist McKayla Maroney. Many of them gave emotional testimony during Nassar's sentencing hearings. Nassar, who had worked as a doctor for the USA Gymnastics federation and also served at an on-campus clinic at Michigan State, earlier this year received a prison … [Read more...] about Gymnastics: Michigan State to pay US$500m to Larry Nassar sex abuse victims

Duterte sex jokes at typhoon briefing meant to ‘lighten the mood’ — Palace
MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang defended Monday President Duterte’s sex jokes during a situation briefing in Camarines Sur, saying that the Chief Executive was just “lightening the mood” as the country reels from the effects of typhoons. According to presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, Duterte was just channeling a Filipino trait to “lighten a problem” when he issued the jokes. Roque further said the public shouldn’t “read anything beyond the fact that the President wants to more or less lighten the mood.” “(B)uong araw … [Read more...] about Duterte sex jokes at typhoon briefing meant to ‘lighten the mood’ — Palace
Gymnastics: US Olympics system ‘failed’ victims of the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal
(REUTERS) - The US Olympic system "failed" the hundreds of young female athletes sexually abused by former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, United States Olympic Committee (USOC) board of directors chairman Larry Probst said on Friday (Feb 9). "The Olympic system in the United States failed these athletes and we are part of the Olympic system in the United States," said Probst, speaking hours before the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Games. He also said the USOC had not taken steps quickly enough to contact gymnasts abused by Nassar and that it had erred by failing to attend earlier sentencing hearings. "That was simply a mistake," he said. "We should have been there." Olympic champion Simone Biles is among several gymnasts who have criticised USOC for not making efforts to get in touch with them as the scandal unfolded. "We took too long to reach out to the gymnasts after these revelations became public. We're in the process of doing that now," said Probst. … [Read more...] about Gymnastics: US Olympics system ‘failed’ victims of the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal
Biden order could change how colleges handle sex misconduct
WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden is set to sign an executive order on Monday directing the Department of Education to review policies implemented by Donald Trump’s administration, including changes to Title IX regulations that prohibit sex discrimination in federally funded institutions, according to administration officials. Biden focused on gender equity during his campaign and promised to strengthen Title IX if he won the White House. He also will sign a second executive order formally establishing the White House Gender Policy Council, according to two administration officials who briefed reporters on the plan. Biden’s transition team announced his plans to create the council before he took office. The order directing the review of Title IX could pave the way to a major shift in how colleges handle allegations of sexual misconduct moving forward. Trump’s education secretary, Betsy DeVos, in 2018 rescinded an Obama-era administration standard in cases of reported sexual … [Read more...] about Biden order could change how colleges handle sex misconduct
