As of Wednesday afternoon, all six books included in the announcement were sold out on sites like Amazon and Barnes & Noble , with resellers listing the discontinued titles for up to $500 on eBay . Copies of Dr. Seuss’ If I Ran the Zoo appeared to have been briefly restocked online , though it’s now sold out as well. In addition to If I Ran the Zoo , the six discontinued Dr. Seuss books include And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, McElligot’s Pool, On Beyond Zebra!, Scrambled Eggs Super! , and The Cat’s Quizzer . Hunger Games prequel: Book set for release next year with movie also in the works
A new Hunger Games novel set decades before the original best-selling trilogy will be published next year, its publisher said on Tuesday (Jun 18), with plans for an accompanying film already under way. The book will revisit the macabre post-apocalyptic world of Panem created by Suzanne Collins' young adult novels, which were adapted into one of Hollywood's biggest movie franchises starring Jennifer Lawrence. The original books, which sold more than 100 million copies, told the story of Katniss Everdeen, a teenage heroine forced by the realm's totalitarian leaders to participate in a reality TV-style fight to the death. The new book will revisit Panem 64 years before the events of the trilogy during a period known as the "Dark Days", in which the nation "struggles to get back to its feet" after a devastating war, Collins said. Four films based on the trilogy of novels - the final book was split into two parts - turned Lawrence into an A-list movie star and grossed US$2.97 … [Read more...] about Hunger Games prequel: Book set for release next year with movie also in the works
Picture books may boost physical activity for youth with autism: Study
A researcher at the University of Missouri recently created fitness picture books that help youth with autism exercise more frequently while offering low-income families. This outcome of the study is a simple resource for workout motivation when outdoor fitness equipment might not be accessible. "There is so much research geared toward helping individuals with autism improve their academic performance, social skills and communication skills, but we also need to remember how important physical activity is for living a healthy lifestyle," said Lorraine Becerra, an assistant teaching professor at the MU College of Education. "There are numerous health benefits of exercise, such as pumping blood in your body, better sleep and reduced risk of obesity. Also, if we can get kids with autism more physically engaged, they are more likely to run around and play with their peers, so there are other aspects of their life we can improve as well," added Becerra. Becerra is also a behavior … [Read more...] about Picture books may boost physical activity for youth with autism: Study
Banned Seuss Site Emerges to Promote Dr. Seuss’ Six Canceled Books
A website called Banned Seuss surfaced on Wednesday to promote the work of Dr. Seuss, following the announcement that six of the author's books will no longer be reprinted due to offensive imagery. "Erasing books is insanity," the website says. "Stand up for our common humanity." The Banned Seuss website currently features And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street , one of the six books from the author that will no longer be reprinted, in full. The website links to the Foundation Against Intolerance and Racism's site, a non-partisan organization that claims to be "dedicated to advancing civil rights and liberties for all Americans." "Increasingly, American institutions—colleges and universities, businesses, government, the media, and even our children's schools—are enforcing a cynical and intolerant orthodoxy. This orthodoxy requires us to view each other based on immutable characteristics like skin color, gender, and sexual orientation," the foundation says on its … [Read more...] about Banned Seuss Site Emerges to Promote Dr. Seuss’ Six Canceled Books
Stephen Colbert Praises Dr. Seuss Book Ban As ‘Responsible’
Stephen Colbert has waded into the Dr. Suess controversy this week with the late-night host branding the move "responsible." Six books by the children's author Dr. Seuss will no longer be published by Dr. Seuss Enterprises due to racist and insensitive content, the Associated Press reported on Monday. The decision is being criticized by some who are not in favor of the author being posthumously "canceled." The announcement was made Read Across America Day, which was also the late author's birthday. "It's a responsible move on their part," Colbert said on Tuesday's installment of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert . "There hadn't been an earth-shattering outcry, but they recognize the impact these images might have on readers, especially kids, and they're trying to fix it because Dr. Seuss books should be fun for all people—Black, white, straight, gay, Sneetches both star-bellied and plain, Loraxes, Barb-a-loots, all the Whos down in Whoville and the strange, angry … [Read more...] about Stephen Colbert Praises Dr. Seuss Book Ban As ‘Responsible’
