Coronavirus: Some workers in key areas can tap grandparents for childcare

Exemptions will be made for some families to continue to tap grandparents for childcare support, said the Ministry of Health (MOH). Its announcement comes a day after the multi-ministry task force on Covid-19 said parents should not drop their children off at the grandparents' place daily during the circuit breaker, to protect the elderly. The exemptions apply where: • Both parents are essential service workers and are unable to work from home; • One parent is a healthcare professional such as a doctor, nurse or support care staff and is unable to work from home; or • One parent is an essential service worker unable to work from home and the family has a child or children below age three. This flexibility is to help parents who are essential service workers and may not be able to arrange for alternative childcare, MOH said. They include healthcare workers on the front line working on shifts and on weekends, when childcare centres may not be available, and who … [Read more...] about Coronavirus: Some workers in key areas can tap grandparents for childcare

New app allows the elderly with dementia and their caregivers to go on a trip down memory lane

SINGAPORE - Caregivers can now access an app which can help in interacting with elderly dementia patients. Launched on Monday (Sept 28) by Singapore's National Heritage Board (NHB), National Museums Liverpool and the British Council, the local version of the digital application contains multimedia features and images of relatable everyday items from Singapore's yesteryear. Originally launched in the United Kingdom in 2014, the My House of Memories application has also been adapted for users in the United States. Similar to a digital scrapbook, it draws on the power of familiar items - from the 1930s to the 1990s - to evoke memory and help users share personal stories with their caregivers. The items featured in the local version of the app include 100 objects from Singapore's National Collection and 11 additional objects from the Alzheimer's Disease Association. They include the Setron television set, the first locally manufactured black-and-white TV set in 1964, as well as a … [Read more...] about New app allows the elderly with dementia and their caregivers to go on a trip down memory lane

A watch that reads minds and hooks you up on dates? Why not, says G-Shock creator

When you’re known for designing one of the world’s most iconic watches ever, it’s perfectly understandable if you’d just kick back, relax and rest on your laurels for the rest of your life. But apparently, coming up with Casio’s G-Shock isn’t quite enough for Kikuo Ibe, who’s still got some wild ideas straight out of some sci-fi movie. For instance, watches that could read your mind like some telepathic techno-mutant or perhaps a Tinder-version on your wrist to hook up with someone. “You don’t even have to look at your watch to know the time – you just have to think and it automatically tells you the time in your head,” came the 66-year-old Japanese engineer-by-trade’s enthusiastic reply through a translator. READ: ‘I own 470 G-Shocks’: Exploring the obsessions of Singapore’s watch collectors “And nowadays, young people have less opportunities to meet other people – so if a man’s wearing a G-Shock and a lady’s wearing a Baby-G and they pass each other, they’ll get … [Read more...] about A watch that reads minds and hooks you up on dates? Domingo gets standing ovation in Salzburg despite sexual harassment claims

SALZBURG, Austria: Opera legend Placido Domingo on Sunday (Aug 25) received a standing ovation at the Salzburg Festival, his first performance since he was accused of sexually harassing women. "Triumph in Salzburg, standing ovation for Domingo despite the Me Too affair," a headline in the regional daily Kleine Zeitung said, following his performance in the Giuseppe Verdi opera "Luisa Miller" at the annual music and drama festival in Austria. Eight singers and a dancer told the Associated Press earlier this month they were sexually harassed by the former member of the much lauded "Three Tenors", in incidents going back to the 1980s. In a report by the AP, several women, one of whom was identified, accused Domingo of using his position as one of opera's most celebrated singers to pressure them into sexual relationships. The Los Angeles Opera has opened an investigation into the "concerning allegations". Following the claims, the Philadelphia Orchestra Association withdrew its … [Read more...] about Domingo gets standing ovation in Salzburg despite sexual harassment claims

Government agency received 300 calls a day during circuit breaker period for eldercare assistance

SINGAPORE - Social distancing measures have been hard on some people, especially the vulnerable and elderly like Madam Lai Yuet Meng. The 75-year-old has not left her flat in Bukit Panjang, which she shares with her 69-year-old husband, since March. They are both blind and without children to help them. The closest FairPrice outlet is a 30-minute journey away by bus. Thankfully, they have had volunteers from the Silver Generation Office (SGO) to help them, from picking up their groceries to accompanying them for hospital appointments. The volunteers got in touch with Madam Lai after she called the Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) hotline. The SGO is the agency's outreach arm. The AIC, which supports seniors and their caregivers, and links callers to community care services, saw a spike in calls during the circuit breaker period that started on April 7. It received an average of 300 calls a day in the two months leading up to Monday (June 1), or 25 per cent more … [Read more...] about Government agency received 300 calls a day during circuit breaker period for eldercare assistance
