Tickets withdrawn after ‘morality raids’ in Etobicoke’s Marie Curtis Park
The withdrawal of charges against about a dozen men caught up in Toronto police’s “Project Marie” operation in Marie Curtis Park last year has again called into question the thinking behind the plan, which critics say was homophobic. The six-week project last fall in the Etobicoke park, which included the use of undercover officers seeking individuals interested in sexual activity, led to at least 72 people, mostly men, ticketed for non-criminal offences including trespassing and public sexual activity. Police said at the time that only one person was charged with a criminal offence. Almost immediately after news of the project’s results broke last November, a group of about 10 lawyers banded together to offer their services free to anyone caught up in the operation. Toronto lawyer Marcus McCann told the Star about 20 per cent of the individuals ticketed reached out to the group, and all of them had their tickets withdrawn by the prosecution over the course of 10 months, and as … [Read more...] about Tickets withdrawn after ‘morality raids’ in Etobicoke’s Marie Curtis Park
Marie Curtis Park becomes centre point of debate about public space
If you had no idea of the recent news, the two gatherings at Marie Curtis Park in Etobicoke would have just looked like a bunch of people out to enjoy the green space. There were actually diametrically opposed groups brought to the park by their feelings about ‘Project Marie,’ a recent police operation held in the park where over a three-week period, plain clothes officers cited 78 people with 89 charges, the majority of which were bylaw infractions including 71 lewd behaviour tickets, as well as one criminal charge. On Saturday, area residents and community police officers from 22 Division were engaging residents as part of its Walk the Beat initiative, in an effort to step up community enforcement and build a better relationship. About 30 feet away, members of the LGBTQ community held a counter protest called Queers Crash the Beat, expressing their disgust with what they feel was a large scale police investigation with homophobic undertones that they feel targeted a … [Read more...] about Marie Curtis Park becomes centre point of debate about public space
Toronto police cracking down on public sex in Etobicoke park
A registered sex offender, apprehended after exposing himself within the vicinity of children. Two men charged for engaging in sexual activity, in a car at a busy parking lot over the lunch hour. A male park patron observed naked near a popular splash pad in broad daylight. Numerous men caught with their pants down in the bushes off a well-used cycling trail. Those are just a few recent examples of the alleged “lewd” behaviour going on at south Etobicoke’s Marie Curtis Park that officers at 22 Division have been cracking down on in recent weeks as part of “Project Marie.” The month-and-a-half-old police operation, aimed at “taking back” the park, has netted 84 charges against 65 individuals in just the last few weeks alone, said Const. Kevin Ward of 22 Division’s Community Response Unit. “We started Project Marie off with high-visibility presence in the park: stepping up our patrols, riding through the trails, and talking to everybody about what’s been going on and what … [Read more...] about Toronto police cracking down on public sex in Etobicoke park
