FAA to begin key Boeing 737 MAX training review on Monday in London

WASHINGTON: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said a training review for the grounded Boeing 737 MAX will begin on Monday in London, a key milestone for the plane's eventual return to service. The FAA said the Joint Operations Evaluation Board (JOEB) for the Boeing 737 MAX will take place at London Gatwick Airport and meet for approximately nine days "to review Boeing’s proposed training for 737 MAX flight crews" and will include civil aviation authorities and airline flight crews from the United States, Canada, Brazil and the European Union. COVID-19 forces London tourist guides to adapt

LONDON: "I don't know if you're aware, but we're living through a pandemic right now," says Joel Robinson with a smile as he introduces his Jack the Ripper tour in London's East End. Robinson, a trained actor and history buff who works for the tourist company London With A Local, goes on to explain social distancing best practice to his nine clients. Although he doesn't wear them himself, he advises the tourists to wear masks and gloves before they set off through the once-gloomy alleyways of Victorian-era London. Down darkened side streets and past shiny new buildings, Robinson recounts the tale of the still unidentified serial killer of five women who stalked the streets of Whitechapel in 1888. READ: Global coronavirus cases surpass 25 million London's tourist guides are resuming their work slowly as lockdown restrictions are eased, and adapting to new health and safety rules to curb the spread of the virus. UK to end early release for convicted terrorists after London Bridge attack

LONDON: Britain will introduce tougher jail sentences for convicted terrorists and will end early release as part of a series of measures to strengthen its response to terrorism, the government said on Tuesday (Jan 21). Prime Minister Boris Johnson pledged to make changes after an attack near London Bridge in November in which Usman Khan , a convicted terrorist who had been released early from prison , killed two people. Khan had been sentenced to a minimum of eight years in prison in 2012 with a requirement that the parole board assess his danger to the public before release. He was set free in December 2018 without such an assessment. Commentary: Why the London Bridge attacker walked free – while serving terrorism offences

LEEDS: Following the recent attack in London, where convicted terrorist Usman Khan stabbed two Cambridge University graduates to death and seriously wounded at least three other people, many questions are now being asked about the UK’s legal system. The attack has brought to attention the fact that in the UK, people convicted of terror offences (along with other prisoners) can be released after serving half of their sentence. Khan, who was shot dead by police officers following the attack, had been released from jail on licence in 2018 – halfway through a sentence for terrorism offences. READ: Islamic State says London Bridge attack carried out by one of its fighters Khan was convicted in 2011 of plotting to attack the London Stock Exchange, receiving an 18-year sentence. He was given what’s known as an indeterminate public protection sentence (IPP). In theory, IPP prisoners can stay in prison for the rest of their lives. But Khan’s IPP was quashed by the Court of … [Read more...] about Commentary: Why the London Bridge attacker walked free – while serving terrorism offences

Terror checks intensify as London Bridge attack enters election fray

LONDON: Britain's Boris Johnson said Sunday (Dec 2) he had ordered the security services to step up monitoring of convicted terrorists released early from prison, prompting accusations that he was exploiting the London Bridge attack for political gain less than two weeks before elections. The prime minister revealed officials were scrutinising about 74 people with terrorist convictions who had been released early from prison like Usman Khan, who left jail last December and went on to stab two people to death in Friday's rampage. "They are being properly invigilated to make sure there is no threat," Johnson told the BBC. "We've taken a lot of action as you can imagine in the last 48 hours." Under the review of released terror convicts, police in the West Midlands said they had arrested a 34-year-old man "on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts". Police shoot dead man who killed 2 in London stabbing, call it terrorist attack

LONDON: British police on Friday (Nov 29) shot dead a man wearing a fake suicide vest who stabbed two people to death in London and injured three more before being wrestled to the ground by bystanders, in what the authorities called a terrorist attack. The attacker went on the rampage just before 2pm (1400 GMT), targeting people at Fishmongers' Hall near London Bridge in the heart of the city's financial district - the scene of a deadly attack by militants two years ago. "It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to inform you that as well as the suspect who was shot dead by the police two of those injured in this attack in the London Bridge area have tragically lost their lives," said Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick. "A male suspect was shot by specialist armed officers from the City of London police and I can confirm that this suspect died at the scene," the United Kingdom's top counter-terrorism officer, Neil Basu, told reporters. A number of people were … [Read more...] about Police shoot dead man who killed 2 in London stabbing, call it terrorist attack
