Colonial troops used the road against the Waikato tribes in a series of conflicts that would define the nation. Today, motorists driving between Auckland and Waikato still use remains of the old road, unaware of the blood shed beneath their wheels. National Correspondent Florence Kerr reports. Black bitumen with its stone chip crust slithers into Kīngitanga lands, weaving in and out of hāpu boundary lines, straddling the Waikato River. The second part of the old Great South Road from Drury, north of Auckland, through to Kihikihi was made for war. PARIS: Disruption to schooling stemming from the COVID-19 epidemic will cause a skill loss that could result in a 1.5 per cent drop in global economic output for the rest of this century, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development estimated. For the United States, that will represent an economic loss of US$15.3 trillion, the OECD said in a report published on Tuesday (Sep 8), with the bill rising higher still if disruption to education extends into the next academic year. "Learning loss will lead to skill loss, and the skills people have relate to their productivity," the report said, explaining the forecast drop in global GDP.
