Wildfires rage in California as heatwave lingers across US West

LOS ANGELES: Three large wildfires continued to burn in California as a record-breaking heat wave lingered across large swaths of the western United States on Monday (Sep 7). The Creek Fire, which has engulfed the Fresno area in central California and caused the emergency evacuation over the weekend of more than 200 people vacationing at a popular reservoir, was still 0% contained as of Monday afternoon, fire officials said. The blaze, growing under "extreme weather conditions," had devoured nearly 79,000 acres (32,000 hectares) of land, while a cause remained under investigation, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) said in a statement. Officials in Madera County issued evacuation orders and urged the county's 157,000 residents to leave if they felt unsafe. A hiker who had just embarked on a multi-day trip when the Creek Fire broke out and had to find a way out of the blaze shared the harrowing experience on social media. About 500,000 people evacuated in Oregon as wildfires rage

LOS ANGELES: Around half a million people in Oregon evacuated as dozens of extreme, wind-driven wildfires scorched US West Coast states on Friday (Sep 11), destroying thousands of homes and killing at least 16 people, state and local authorities said. In southern Oregon, an apocalyptic scene of burned residential subdivisions and trailer parks stretched for miles along Highway 99 south of Medford through Phoenix and Talent, one of the worst hit areas, according to a Reuters photographer at the scene. Blazes jumped from wildfires burning through scrub and forest to suburban firestorms as flames jumped from house to house. Online video from the Tacoma, Washington, area showed fires starting in a residential area and setting homes ablaze, and locals running from house to house to warn neighbors. "Everybody out, everybody out," a man screamed as firefighters tried to douse flames. Wild weather this year shows growing impact of climate change, scientists say

LONDON: The planet is showing signs it's in peril. In recent weeks, the world has seen ferocious wildfires in the US West, torrential rains in Africa, weirdly warm temperatures on the surface of tropical oceans, and record heat waves from California to the Siberian Arctic. This spate of wild weather is consistent with climate change, scientists say, and the world can expect even more extreme weather and higher risks from natural disasters as global emissions of greenhouse gases continue. "We are seeing the emergence of some signals that would have had almost no chance of happening without human-induced climate change," said Sonia Seneviratne, a climate scientist at Swiss university ETH Zurich. For decades, scientists have warned of such events – but have been wary of saying that a particular storm or heat wave was a direct result of climate change. That's now changing. TikTok sues Trump administration over US ban, calls it an election ploy

NEW YORK: TikTok and one of its employees on Monday (Aug 24) separately sued US President Donald Trump's administration over his executive order banning transactions in the United States with the popular short-form video-sharing app, calling it a pretext to fuel anti-China rhetoric as he seeks re-election. Culver City, California-based TikTok and its Chinese parent ByteDance Ltd rejected what they called the White House's position that it was a national security threat, saying they had taken "extraordinary measures to protect the privacy and security of TikTok's US user data." They also described Trump's call in his Aug. 6 executive order for a TikTok ban as a means to further his alleged "broader campaign of anti-China rhetoric" ahead of the Nov 3 US presidential election, where Trump is seeking a second term. "We do not take suing the government lightly," TikTok said in a blog post. "But with the Executive Order threatening to bring a ban on our US operations ... we simply … [Read more...] about TikTok sues Trump administration over US ban, calls it an election ploy
