Schoolgirl Sophie Weenink made it into the Reader’s Digest when, aged 13, she organised a beach clean up in Nelson that netted over 200kg of rubbish. Two years on, she has bought an electric skateboard, and made a habit of buying locally-produced food and second-hand clothes to try to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and waste. People needed to make sustainable consumer choices if they wanted to make a “real change” to protect the planet, she told citizen-led group the Nelson Tasman Climate Forum, which invited her to speak on Saturday as it discussed what people could do to mitigate and adapt to climate change. “We just have to be smart about what we’re purchasing,” said Weenink, sporting an op shop-bought dress. Heat wave strikes southern Vietnam
According to reports by Le Dinh Quyet, deputy head of the forecasting department at the Southern Regional Hydrometeorology Station, the current heat wave is caused by a subtropical high-pressure system crossing the south. Moving forward over the coming days, Quyet anticipates that the region’s UV Index will remain at a ‘very high’ level, from nine to 10. He therefore predicts that the next five days will see the average temperature in the southern region remain around 34 to 36 degrees Celsius. In Ho Chi Minh City, average temperatures will be around 35 to 36 degrees Celsius, although the real feel may be higher, around 37 to 38 degrees Celsius. Local residents are therefore advised to wear sun protective clothing alongside sunglasses, hats, face masks, and sunscreen when going out during the daytime. They are also encouraged to drink more water to avoid dehydration in the scorching sun. … [Read more...] about Heat wave strikes southern Vietnam

Volunteering and vacationing on the Greek island where Aesop told his stories
Legend has it that when Aesop, a slave, was brought to the Greek island of Samos, he so charmed the locals with his fables that they not only freed him, but honoured him with a shrine. That Aesop should have come to this Northern Aegean island for freedom holds a special poignancy today, even if it is only myth, because Samos is now home to one of the largest refugee camps in Greece. More than 4,400 asylum seekers from the Middle East and Africa live in and around an overcrowded camp above the port town of Vathy, the capital of Samos, waiting for clearance to cross the sea to the mainland and beyond, where they hope to find a future. Unlike the other Greek island camps, which tend to be built in remote places, the Samos camp is close enough to town to allow refugees to walk to shops and the seafront, so when I was there in October and this summer, I was able to meet some and do what I could to help, even as I was also exploring the island, renowned for its dramatic … [Read more...] about Volunteering and vacationing on the Greek island where Aesop told his stories
