Dental group clarifies stand on e-cigarettes

The Philippine College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (PCOMS), one of the biggest groups of dental professionals in the country, said that it respects the stance of some members who urged smokers to switch to non-combustible alternatives. Dr. Fernando Fernandez, a member and former president of the group, spoke during the Scientific Conversations on Tobacco Harm Reduction that if patients cannot quit, they should shift to a “non-combustible nicotine delivery system.” “We are convincing our patients to stop smoking. But if our patients cannot quit, we advise them to at least consider shifting to a non-combustible nicotine delivery system, rather than continue smoking cigarettes and see our patients die of oral cancer,” Fernandez said, referring to smoke-free tobacco harm reduction devices such as electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products. Fernandez’s statement was mentioned in a recent Senate hearing on vaping and heated tobacco regulations. He also called on his … [Read more...] about Dental group clarifies stand on e-cigarettes

Will Republicans Try Another Election Coup in 2024?

Better luck next time for a losing Republican presidential candidate? Photo: J. Scott Applewhite/Pool/Getty Images There is a lot of angst in Republican Establishment circles over the 45th president’s reported rant at a Republican donor conference near his Florida home over the weekend. Trump is apparently still furious at Brian Kemp for impeding his election coup, and Mike Pence for failing to steal a second term for him anyway, and at Mitch McConnell for refusing to back his electoral vote challenge and then criticizing him for inciting a riot. To Republicans who aren’t deep in the fever swamps of MAGA-land, this is just Trump continuing his narcissistic and destructive post-election behavior. Just as he blew up those crucial Georgia Senate runoffs in January because he couldn’t let go of his own lies about the presidential election, he’s blowing up the party at a time when the GOP needs to stay unified in the fight against Biden . And to those of us without a betting … [Read more...] about Will Republicans Try Another Election Coup in 2024?

Nanda: Talk of peace is slow in Afghanistan, but the U.S. must not abandon them now

Afghanistan continues to suffer from deadly violence while the historic Taliban-Afghan peace talks are underway thousands of miles away in Doha, Qatar. These U.S.-brokered talks follow the U.S.-Taliban agreement signed on Feb. 29, under which a “permanent and comprehensive ceasefire would be an item on the agenda of the intra-Afghan dialogue and negotiations” to discuss the terms of an eventual accord “over the future political roadmap of Afghanistan.” Other issues the agreement addressed were the withdrawal of U.S. troops, reduction of violence, and the Taliban commitment that al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations will not operate in Afghanistan. On its part, the U.S. agreed to reduce the number of troops from 12,000 to 8,600 within 135 days and to a phased withdrawal of all American soldiers over 14 months. President Donald Trump told reporters last week that U.S. service members in Afghanistan will be down “very shortly over the next couple of weeks, to 4,000 – less than … [Read more...] about Nanda: Talk of peace is slow in Afghanistan, but the U.S. must not abandon them now

Jaylen Brown Speaks Out On Recent ‘Inhumane Events’: ‘I Got Nothing Basketball To Talk About’

BOSTON (CBS) — Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown has always approached his place in the public eye as being someone who’s much more than just a basketball player. Still young at just 24 years old, Brown has taken a significant step over the past year in becoming an outspoken voice against racial injustices in the United States. Brown took Monday night as an opportunity to do so, when he spoke to the media after the Celtics’ 116-115 win in Portland. He was asked about the recent police shooting in Minnesota — what the police called an accidental discharge of a firearm, which left Daunte Wright dead — as well as the voter suppression situation in his native Georgia.
