REUTERS: Chile's Joaquin Niemann, who had to skip last month's Masters after testing positive for COVID-19, grabbed a share of the early first-round clubhouse lead at the Mayakoba Classic in Playa del Carmen, Mexico on Thursday. The former top-ranked amateur mixed an eagle, four birdies and a bogey for a five-under-par 66 in windy conditions at El Camaleon Golf Club where he and Argentine Emiliano Grillo were a shot clear of Norway's Viktor Hovland. "Took me a couple holes to like figure it out a little bit with the wind and stuff, but I'm really happy the way I played and the way I finished," Niemann said. World number three Justin Thomas, the highest-ranked player in the field, carded a one-over-par 72 that included a double-bogey at the par-four 14th. Rickie Fowler, a five-times winner on the PGA Tour, did well to salvage a one-under-par 70 despite a roller-coaster round that included a quadruple-bogey and a double-bogey. Fowler, who started on the back nine, began … [Read more...] about Chile’s Niemann grabs share of clubhouse lead in Mexico

Pope’s new cardinal in Mexico known for indigenous outreach
MEXICO CITY: Among the new cardinals formally installed by Pope Francis on Saturday (Nov 28) is an outspoken Mexican cleric who has spent decades ministering to the mostly poor, indigenous communities near the country's southern border with Guatemala. Felipe Arizmendi, known for progressive views on indigenous rights and migrants as well as a staunchly conservative stance on sexuality, was presented with the ring and scarlet red biretta of the so-called princes of the Catholic church at a scaled-down ceremony at the Vatican due to pandemic precautions. One of 13 prelates to receive the honorific on Saturday, Arizmendi has served as a bishop in the southern state of Chiapas since the early 1990s, just before the launch of the indigenous uprising led by the Zapatista National Liberation Army, which had issued a declaration of war against the government citing a long history of oppression. In the years since, Arizmendi has lauded the Zapatista movement's demands for justice, in … [Read more...] about Pope’s new cardinal in Mexico known for indigenous outreach

Latin American crime cartels turn to crypto to clean up their cash
MEXICO CITY: In April 2019, Mexican police arrested suspected human trafficker Ignacio Santoyo in a plush area of the Caribbean resort of Playa del Carmen after linking him to a prostitution racket extending across Latin America. Yet it was not the 2,000 women Santoyo is alleged to have blackmailed and sexually exploited that ultimately led to his capture, but the bitcoin he is suspected of using to help launder the proceeds of his operations, officials said. The cryptocurrency is emerging as a new front in Latin America's struggle against gangs battling for control of vast criminal markets for sex, drugs, guns and people, according to law-enforcement authorities. "There's a transition to committing crimes in cyberspace, like acquiring cryptocurrencies to launder money ... and the pandemic is accelerating it," said Santiago Nieto, head of the Mexican finance ministry's financial intelligence unit (UIF). Neither Santoyo, who is in custody, nor lawyers representing him … [Read more...] about Latin American crime cartels turn to crypto to clean up their cash
‘No presents’: Mexicans urged to embrace abstemious Christmas to stop COVID-19 pandemic
MEXICO CITY: Mexicans should cancel celebrations and even avoid exchanging Christmas presents to beat the coronavirus, the president said on Friday (Dec 12), pitching a frugal festive season to one of the world's largest capital cities as infections scaled new heights. "Let's leave Christmas presents for another time," President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said, urging people to scale down or forego traditional family gatherings over Christmas and New Year. Lopez Obrador said people should stay at home unless they had something "truly important to do" as he announced hospitals would increase patient capacity, equipment and staff. However, he said there would be no mandatory lockdowns. Mexico reported 12,127 new COVID-19 infections on Friday, a record number for a single day rise, barring one day in October the government has said was due to a statistical blip. It was also the first time Mexico had recorded more than 10,000 new cases three days in a row. The president said his … [Read more...] about ‘No presents’: Mexicans urged to embrace abstemious Christmas to stop COVID-19 pandemic
Vaccine is no shot in the arm yet for emerging markets
LONDON: Emerging markets have surged on the prospect that coronavirus vaccines will become widely available soon, but analysts think the rally is overplayed given the risks from slower rollouts for some economies that could delay their recoveries. Several vaccines are now close to fruition, including at least two produced in emerging markets Russia and China, but budgetary constraints in paying for them and challenges in storage and distribution cloud the outlook for many economies. Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, India and Russia are tipped to be among the first to receive a boost from the arrival of vaccines, but in most emerging markets demand may outstrip supply, analysts say. The logistical headache of transporting supplies to some of the more rural parts of large economies like India and poorer countries may also present obstacles. "I do think the vaccine 'relief rally' for EM is overdone and is more sentiment than reality driven," said Beth Morrissey, managing partner … [Read more...] about Vaccine is no shot in the arm yet for emerging markets
