Solid Lille beat Monaco to slash PSG’s lead to two points

PARIS: Lille cut Paris St Germain's Ligue 1 lead to two points when they claimed a comprehensive 2-1 home victory against Monaco on Sunday. Christophe Galtier's side, who have only lost one competitive game this season and have qualified for the Europa League last 32, prevailed through second-half goals by Jonathan David and Yusuf Yazici. They now have 26 points from 13 games, two ahead of Olympique de Marseille who have two games in hand in a table where the top six teams are within five points of each other. Monaco, who had won their last four games, reduced the arrears in the last minute through Pietro Pellegri but drop to fifth in the table on 23 points. Hamilton: Singapore “almost worse than Monaco” to overtake

Early race leader Charles Leclerc 's tactic of backing up the field to help better preserve his tyres meant everyone was lapping several seconds off the pace in a long train of cars. And for Hamilton , the lack of passing spots was a key factor in limiting the potential for excitement. "This unfortunately, it is a really beautiful place that we come to and it is such a great track, but it is worse than Monaco almost. Was it as boring as Monaco to watch that race?" he asked reporters after the race. "Maybe we need to change the last corner so we stop in a hairpin and we have a tight hairpin to go around. "The [current] last corner, you cannot follow and it is a sequence of five quite fast corners that come up after where you never get close. That will make it even more special this track maybe." Track indoor worlds in China canceled for 2nd straight year

MONACO: The track and field indoor world championships in China have been postponed for the second straight year. World Athletics on Thursday said the city of Nanjing, the intended host of the 2020 meeting, now also cannot host the next edition in March. “There is still significant uncertainty about the state of the COVID-19 pandemic in the early part of 2021,” the sport's governing body said in a statement. “We must duly consider the risks in bringing a large group of people to attend the event under the pandemic situation and fully respect and carry out the pandemic prevention policy of the host country." Nanjing is about 530 kilometers (330 miles) from Wuhan, where the coronavirus emerged one year ago. The city has agreed to host the indoor track worlds in 2023, World Athletics said. Belgrade in Serbia is the scheduled 2022 host. … [Read more...] about Track indoor worlds in China canceled for 2nd straight year

Motor racing-Montoya reunites with McLaren for Indy 500

REUTERS: Juan Pablo Montoya will join Arrow McLaren for next year's Indianapolis 500, the team said on Wednesday, as the Colombian chases a third win at the Brickyard. One of only three drivers to win races in Formula One, IndyCar and NASCAR, the 45-year-old Montoya becomes the third member of a team that also includes full-time drivers Mexican Patricio O'Ward and Swede Felix Rosenqvist. "I’m very excited to be joining Arrow McLaren SP for the Indianapolis 500," Montoya said in a statement. "I have some great history with McLaren from my F1 days and I’m looking forward to making some more at next year’s Indianapolis 500." The partnership is a reunion of sorts for Montoya who finished his F1 career with McLaren Mercedes with whom he claimed three of his seven career wins. Montoya made his F1 debut with Williams in 2001 and won four times with that team, including the 2003 Monaco Grand Prix. The Colombian won his first Indianapolis 500 as a rookie in 2000 and his second … [Read more...] about Motor racing-Montoya reunites with McLaren for Indy 500

Tennis: Wawrinka hungry for final push before career swansong, says Vallverdu

MUMBAI: Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka still has the hunger to be consistently competitive against top players and wants to make a final push for success before the end of his career, his coach Daniel Vallverdu has told Reuters. Wawrinka's last ATP title came in 2017 before the former world number three underwent knee surgery. The injury continued to trouble him through 2018 during which his ranking fell to 263. The 35-year-old Swiss has since been on a rise, making two finals in 2019, and continued the good work at the start of 2020 by reaching the Australian Open quarter-finals. The shutdown due to COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty in the calendar proved "challenging" but Wawrinka managed to make a strong end to the year by reaching the quarter-finals in St Petersburg and the ATP Masters in Paris. "Once the tour had a little bit more of a structure and we knew that tournaments were going to happen he found his motivation again and we were able to practise … [Read more...] about Tennis: Wawrinka hungry for final push before career swansong, says Vallverdu

Motor racing-Formula E founder Agag’s brother-in-law buys into Venturi team

LONDON: The Monaco-based Venturi Formula E team co-founded by Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio has been sold to a group of investors led by the Spanish brother-in-law of series chairman Alejandro Agag. The electric racing team, led by Susie Wolff whose husband Toto runs Formula One champions Mercedes, announced the takeover on Wednesday. American Scott Swid and Spaniard Jose Maria Aznar Botella become managing partners of the team while Susie Wolff remains principal and Venturi's billionaire founder Gildo Pastor retains an interest. The deal is solely for the Formula E race team and not Venturi Automobiles, which Pastor controls. No financial details were given. City-based Formula E, an FIA world championship, starts its seventh season in January but has been rocked by the announced departures at the end of 2021 of German manufacturers BMW and Audi. The series' major investors are Liberty Global and Discovery Communications. Swid said takeover talks started a year … [Read more...] about Motor racing-Formula E founder Agag’s brother-in-law buys into Venturi team
