THESSALONIKI: Six people died and at least 23 were injured as a fierce storm tore through a beachfront in one of Greece's top tourist areas, terrifying thousands of holidaymakers caught in the open, authorities said Thursday (Jul 11). Six tourists including two children were killed - two each from the Czech Republic, Russia and Romania - in the northern region of Halkidiki, near Greece's second city Thessaloniki, in the storms late Wednesday. There were reports on Thursday that a seventh body had been recovered, but they have not yet been confirmed. "There was panic, people were howling and running to hide inside," said Haris Lazaridis, owner of a tavern where a 54-year-old woman from Romania and her son were killed when the roof caved in. "For five minutes it was hellish," Lazaridis told AFP. He added that more than 100 people were sheltering under the roof when it collapsed. 20 Things Your Most Annoying Friends Do on Facebook
1. TMI Parents We love your babies, really we do. We do not, however, relish vivid descriptions of their every wee wee and poopee. And we especially don't look forward to 46 similar posts every single day. 2. Marketing Congratulations, you have a job! So does the majority of the rest of the 900 million people on Facebook. End of an era: Dunedin’s iconic Captain Cook Hotel to become a Sal’s pizza restaurant
HAMISH MCNEILLY/Stuff.co.nz Dunedin's historic Captain Cook pub underwent a major upgrade before reopening in its last incarnation, in this video from 2016. An iconic part of Dunedin student culture has been lost again, with The Captain Cook Hotel set to close down for the third time in less than a decade. The Cook, as it is known locally, which has stood on the corner of Great King Street and Albany Street since 1878, will become home to Dunedin's first Sal's Pizza franchise. However, while the pub and restaurant will close down, the live music venue upstairs will remain, and will keep the Captain Cook name. The original iteration of The Cook, with its cheap beer, large outside area and hugely popular student nights, closed down in 2013. Seven Dunedin bars to fight for longer hours
Seven Dunedin bars plan to fight for longer opening hours, after the introduction of a new alcohol policy. The local alcohol policy (LAP) came into force on February 1, with key changes including bars outside the central business district to shut by midnight. That compares with bars in the CBD, which must close at 3am, with a one-way door policy from 2.30am. The District Licensing Committee deemed 19 city bars as being in or next to a residential area. Of those, seven requested a review of the reduced business hours: The Baaa Sports Bar, Mitchell's Tavern, Eureka, Mornington Tavern, St Kilda Tavern, Mosgiel Tavern and Cableways.
