Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 is a solid video card, if the price is right

Nvidia wants you to replace your old GTX 1060 already for 1080p gaming. That's no surprise, considering that graphics processor has been around since 2016. The company hopes its AI-driven DLSS upscaling (for faster frame rates at a given resolution) will be more attractive in the new entry-level RTX 3060 than it ever did in the meh RTX 2060 line it replaces. It's not a bad bet; DLSS had severe performance drawbacks in the Turing generation of GPUs, but the 30-series' Ampere silicon makes it worth it on occasion. Unfortunately, it's not easy to buy a graphics card right now because of supply shortages. That will be especially true for the RTX 3060, which has an attractive starting price of $329 (£299, about AU$530). It begins shipping today, but good luck finding one in stock for a while. Nvidia starts boosting frame rates by up to 10 percent on 30-series GPUs

Nvidia has started to roll out support for Resizable BAR, a feature of PCI Express that can boost frame rates in certain games by up to 10 percent. The new RTX 3060 graphics card is the first to include Resizable BAR, which allows certain CPUs to access the full graphics frame buffer, instead of being limited to reading just 256MB blocks. Support for other 30-series GPUs will be available in late March. You’ll need the right CPU, motherboard, and graphics card to utilize this new feature, and Nvidia is working with both AMD and Intel to provide chipset support. AMD’s Zen 3 CPUs are supported, alongside Intel’s 10th Gen processors and the company’s upcoming 11th Gen S chips. Much like AMD’s Smart Access Memory, Resizable BAR on Nvidia GPUs can boost frame rates in certain games by up to 10 percent. The boost is really game dependent, and resolution can also impact how much performance will increase. “In our testing, we’ve found some titles benefit from a few percent, up to 10 … [Read more...] about Nvidia starts boosting frame rates by up to 10 percent on 30-series GPUs

Nvidia’s resizable BAR explained: What is it and how can you get a gaming boost?

Laptops and desktops running Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3000 graphics just got a new feature this year called resizable BAR (base address registers). The feature arrived with the debut of the GeForce RTX 3060 , and through software drivers coming in March, it will work across Nvidia’s line of 3000 series GPUs on desktop and mobile . For GeForce gamers, the added support for resizable BAR means you’ll get a performance boost in select games without having to upgrade to a more expensive GPU , which is definitely good news. What is resizable BAR? Resizable BAR is a feature of the PCI Express interface that Nvidia chose to implement on its latest graphics cards, and it allows the processor and the graphics card to share access to resources for faster data transfer. In fact, Nvidia’s implementation isn’t unlike what rival AMD previously demonstrated with its Smart Access Memory, which allows its Ryzen processors to better and more efficiently communicate with its Radeon GPUs. … [Read more...] about Nvidia’s resizable BAR explained: What is it and how can you get a gaming boost?

Gamers have a lot to thank Dr. Mark Dean for, and the world’s first 1GHz chip is only the start

Where do you begin when talking with inventor, IBM Fellow, engineer, and professor Dr. Mark Dean? His work on the IBM PC, ISA system bus, and Color Graphics Adapter in the 1980s is surpassed only by the project he led in the early 2000s, breaking the 1GHz clock speed barrier with a chip for the first time. Dr. Mark Dean Dr. Mark Dean earned a BSEE degree from the University of Tennessee in 1979, where he would return as John Fischer Distinguished Professor later in life. He also has an MSEE degree from Florida Atlantic University (1982), and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University (1992). In between all that he was breaking convention and working on cutting-edge technologies at IBM. Dean went on to become CTO of IBM Middle East and Africa, before shifting gears to achieve another lifelong goal of becoming a faculty member at a university, researching neuromorphic computing and advanced computer architectures at The University of Tennessee Knoxville, Tickle … [Read more...] about Gamers have a lot to thank Dr. Mark Dean for, and the world’s first 1GHz chip is only the start
