‘Time to accept that Dhaka attackers had an IS link’

'The police had cautioned me that there could be some 'trouble' in Dhaka by the end of June.' "I t's time Sheikh Hasina accepts that the militants who attacked the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka had connections with Islamic State," Anizzujaman , Professor Emeritus of Bengali at Dhaka University, tells Rediff.com 's Indrani Roy over the telephone from Dhaka. A resident of Gulshan, the area where the attack took place, Professor Anizzujaman, who has actively supported the cause of atheist bloggers in Bangladesh, received a death threat on his mobile in November after which the government provided him with a bodyguard. Professor Anizzujaman, below, left , believes the Bangladesh government should not waste time debating if the terrorists had connections with IS and instead track down the terror trail without delay. Gulshan is a high security area. Do you think an attack of this magnitude means there was a serious lapse on the administration's part? Employers to pay S$70 to S$400 more in foreign worker levy

SINGAPORE: Employers will have to pay between S$70 and S$400 more in foreign worker levy within the next two years. The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) gave details on Tuesday of the increases, announced by Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam in his Budget Statement on Monday. MOM said the levy rates will vary and will be based on the skills of the workers and how reliant the company is on foreign workers. Homegrown bakery Pine Garden's Cake is one of the companies affected by the new tightening measures on foreign workers. Within the next two years, the company has to fork out as much as S$250 more a month in levies for every foreign worker it hires. But the bakery says a much more bitter pill to swallow is the reduction in Dependency Ratio Ceiling (DRC). Under the changes, it can hire fewer foreigners with the same number of local workers. Wei Chan, business development director at Pine Garden's Cake said: "The dependency ratio is the worst. When you talk about … [Read more...] about Employers to pay S$70 to S$400 more in foreign worker levy

Why Toronto will reveal which workplaces have COVID outbreaks

From an Amazon warehouse to an industrial bakery to a hot skin care brand and a circuit board manufacturer, there are several COVID-19 outbreaks in workplaces across the GTA, but information about where they are occurring is being shared in a haphazard manner. After pressure from workplace advocates and health officials, Toronto authorities will now name businesses with outbreaks that pose a significant risk to public health. While it is a move toward transparency and is being welcomed by some, the city is only one part of the province and several other jurisdictions have yet to follow suit. Sara Mojtehedzadeh is the Star’s work and wealth reporter, and has been pursuing this story since the beginning of the pandemic. She joins “This Matters” to discuss what this means for essential workers, how the new reporting will work and what it means for the average citizen. Listen to this episode and more at “ This Matters ” or subscribe at Apple Podcasts , Spotify , Google … [Read more...] about Why Toronto will reveal which workplaces have COVID outbreaks

The city where cars are not welcome

Eckart Würzner, a mayor on a mission to make his city emission-free, is not terribly impressed by promises from General Motors, Ford and other big automakers to swear off fossil fuels. Not that Würzner, the mayor of Heidelberg , is against electric cars . The postcard-perfect city, in southern Germany, gives residents who buy a battery-powered vehicle a bonus of up to 1,000 euros, or $1,200. They get another 1,000 euros if they install a charging station. But electric cars are low on the list of tools that Würzner is using to try to cut Heidelberg’s impact on the climate, an effort that has given the city, home to Germany’s oldest university and an 800-year-old castle ruin, a reputation as a pioneer in environmentally conscious urban planning. Würzner’s goal is to reduce dependence on cars, no matter where they get their juice. Heidelberg is buying a fleet of hydrogen-powered buses, building a network of bicycle “superhighways” to the suburbs and designing neighborhoods … [Read more...] about The city where cars are not welcome

Economic fallout from pandemic disproportionately hits Latinas

Last Updated Mar 3, 2021 7:09 PM EST Esperanza Hernandez and her two daughters are living in a small apartment with a shower curtain used to create a bedroom. She is one of the millions of Latinas in the U.S. who are facing hardships brought on by the coronavirus pandemic . "I've always lived in the shadows," Hernandez said. She lived in the shadows, but she was able to make ends meet. Hernandez, who is undocumented, has always worked full time. In November, she became ill with COVID-19 and spent three weeks in the intensive care unit. Her 19-year-old daughter Andrea, who was born in the U.S., now earns the family's only income while also attending college. "I didn't expect to be responsible for every single detail within my household," Andrea said. The pandemic hit the service industry hard, eliminating jobs in restaurants, housekeeping and childcare. For many undocumented women, their only safety net has become their children. There are no unemployment or disability … [Read more...] about Economic fallout from pandemic disproportionately hits Latinas
