While Pokemon Go is yet to arrive in Russia, the Kremlin has struck preemptively and warned people not to wander into President Vladimir Putin's residence, looking for Pokemon. The smartphone app, which uses a device's GPS technology to allow players to find and capture Pokémon characters in various locations, has become a phenomenon following its release in the U.S. last week. It is gradually being made available across the world, but players in Russia have found ways around this and many are already downloading it, ahead of its likely release next week . Overnight, even a deadly thunderstorm in Moscow that left 17 people injured and one reportedly dead, according to local radio station Govorit Moskva , was blamed on the game. On social media many Russians accused fictional Pokemon character Pikachu, whose electric shock attacks are a staple of the game and animated series, of causing the storm, leading to Pikachu becoming a top Twitter trend in Russia. However, it appears … [Read more...] about Kremlin Tells Pokemon Go Players to Keep Away From Putin’s Residence

Ukraine Issues Pokemon Go Guidelines
Ukraine is drafting regulation for Pokemon Go players, amid concern that some of them may put themselves in grave danger and wander towards sensitive sites or near the frontlines in the country's east. Areas of Ukraine's eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions have been held by Russian-backed separatists since 2014 and despite a ceasefire being in place since 2015, hostilities between the two sides have spiked sporadically. Eastern Ukraine is currently enduring another uptick in violence, with international monitors reporting nearly 1,000 explosions in Donetsk alone over the weekend. The Ukrainian interior ministry has said it will set up guidelines for users of the smartphone app, claiming that the fragile security environment in some parts of the country has given Pokemon Go "a new dimension of threat." Authorities also claimed that more players are dying while playing the game and also committed a greater variety of crimes, though did not cite evidence of either assertion. The … [Read more...] about Ukraine Issues Pokemon Go Guidelines
Pokemon Go Blamed for Illegal Border Crossing
Two youths unaware of their surroundings when they were playing Pokemon Go on their cell phones made an illegal border crossing this week from Canada into the United States in a remote part of Montana, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol said. The two, who were not identified, were found by U.S. Border Patrol agents on Thursday, with their attention affixed to their phones as they were trying to hunt down cartoon characters on a journey that took them over the border. "Both juveniles were so captivated by their Pokemon Go games that they lost track of where they were," said Michael Rappold, a spokesman for the agency. The two were reunited with their mothers at a nearby border patrol station, the agency said. The game has been an unexpected success from Spain to Australia, doubling Nintendo's value since the game's launch in the United States earlier this month. Using mobile devices, players search for virtual Pokemon characters that appear to pop up at office spaces, restaurants, … [Read more...] about Pokemon Go Blamed for Illegal Border Crossing
Pokemon Go Tournament to Be Held in Poland
While the smartphone sensation Pokemon Go has captivated players the world over, Poland is launching the first tournament of the augmented reality game. Pokemon Go simulates the adventures of characters in Nintendo's Pokemon series. The aim is to capture as many of these fictional creatures as possible. The game uses a smartphone's camera and GPS to project an image of a Pokemon near the location of a player in real-time. A user-generated map of Pokemon activity in European reveals Poland to be a hotbed, with nearly 37,000 active locations, dwarfing the same number for Germany, France, Spain and the U.K., which combined total fewer than 4,000. Come Sunday, Poland's Pokemon Go players will get a chance to test their skills, competing in the first Pokemon Go Cup in Warsaw. The tournament is organized by the private Vistula Academy of Finance and Business and by the digital strategy and advertising company Mr. Target. "This is the first event of its kind in Poland and maybe also … [Read more...] about Pokemon Go Tournament to Be Held in Poland
Saudi Arabia Clerics Issue Fatwa on Pokemon Go
Saudi Arabia's top clerical body has issued a warning to fans of the Pokemon franchise that the game's universe promotes un-Islamic values, in response to the smartphone app version that has swept the rest of the world by storm, the Guardian reports. Pokemon Go, which uses a phone's camera and GPS to project Nintendo's fictional Pokemon (pocket monsters) into real world surroundings, is one of the most popular apps in the U.S. and Europe. The aim of the game is to capture as many Pokemon as possible. Although not yet officially available in Saudi Arabia, officials are anticipating the app will attract a lot of interest. It could already be doing so—guides on how to download the app in regions where it is not yet available have been circulating online since it first appeared earlier this month. Saudi's Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta, which has the authority to issue religious bans on products (fatwa), published an older edict, banning Pokemon on the … [Read more...] about Saudi Arabia Clerics Issue Fatwa on Pokemon Go
Pokemon Go datamine points to long-rumored routes, tappable rewards, and rating challenges
A big Pokemon Go datamine compiled by the sleuths on the Silph Road subreddit has uncovered traces of routes and their rewards, as well as new challenges including an almost dog show-esque Pokemon comparison. Reddit user martycochrane collected the recent findings in a tidy, not-so-little write-up. The headliner was the new route feature which, according to the datamine, would add a new type of challenge and routine to the game. From what we've seen so far, routes are essentially player-made paths that string together hotspots, landmarks, Pokestops, and other in-game bonuses to create a fun and profitable route to take while playing the game. This is all unofficial and subject to change, but it sounds like the augmented reality equivalent of building and uploading a custom level. Completing a route would award a route badge, and each route would be dotted with trade opportunities, collectible stamps and postcards, and potentially tappable rewards like candies and coins. … [Read more...] about Pokemon Go datamine points to long-rumored routes, tappable rewards, and rating challenges
