Yesterday, we reported on a document, sent to Gamestop locations and obtained by Kotaku, that indicated Sony was disabling high-definition content via component cables. In discussing the latest PS3 model, the memo stated, "The 'K' systems will come with an AV cable, however, if you want to play a game or watch a movie in high definition you must use an HDMI cable," before going on to instruct employees to sell HDMI cables alongside the new systems. We've contacted Sony, which told us the report is inaccurate. "The new CECH-3000 series PS3 requires HDMI only for BD movie output in HD, in compliance with AACS standards," Sony told Ars. "PS3 continues to support component output for HD gaming and streaming content." The Advanced Access Content System is a standard for DRM, and states that full high-definition video resolutions are limited to HDMI and DVI cables, which support HDCP. Starting in 2014, new Blu-ray players won't be able to include component ports at all in … [Read more...] about Sony explains new PS3: HDMI required for HD video only, not games

Hotz lawyer: PS3 hacking case over, DMCA and IP abuse live on
The legal action between Sony and George Hotz has come to a close, with both sides seemingly happy with the results . Sony has Hotz agreeing not to do bad things to its hardware, and Hotz gets to be left alone and continue with his life. Neither side has admitted any liability in the matter, and things seemed to have worked out... for the best? Ars Technica spoke with Yasha Heidari, one of Hotz's lawyers, who said the most important thing to take from this case is a knowledge of how large companies strong-arm their opponents when it comes to copyright issues and the DMCA, and to be aware of your rights. The best way to fight back? Don't give companies who do these things your money. The conversation was enlightening on a number of levels. According to the settlement agreement, Hotz will not be "engaging in any unauthorized access to any SONY PRODUCT under the law," nor will he be "engaging in any unauthorized access to any SONY PRODUCT under the terms of any SCEA or SCEA … [Read more...] about Hotz lawyer: PS3 hacking case over, DMCA and IP abuse live on

Insomniac: No one does PS3 better than us [update: not exactly]
[Edit: In a show of class that demonstrates exactly why he's one of the most respected people in the games industry, Ted Price has responded to and corrected the quotes upon which this story was based. And because he's Ted Price, he also managed to turn it into a call to action for gamers who haven't yet added their voices in protest to California's pending law restricting the sale of violent games to minors. You really need to readTed's blog postright now .] Let's do a little word association. If I say "PS3 killer app" what's the first thing that comes to mind? Insomniac would like to believe it's ether Resistance or Ratchet & Clank. The studio behind two of the most successful PS3 franchises has a lot to be confident about, but CEO Ted Price thinks it deserves a higher accolade than just "successful." Above: Insomniac's upcoming Ratchet & Clank platformer, All 4 One. The studio is going all out for this one, turning the typical single-player gameplay into a … [Read more...] about Insomniac: No one does PS3 better than us [update: not exactly]
Can’t stop the signal: Sony’s options limited in face of PS3 jailbreak
The PlayStation 3 is a compromised system. Its master key is all over the Internet, custom firmware allowing third-party software to run on the hardware is a click away, and Sony is furiously trying to stop this information from spreading . The company asked the courts for a temporary restraining order keeping those responsible from any further sharing of the keys or information about cracking the PS3, and is suing for damages. The legal battle may be long and expensive for both sides, or it may fizzle out to nothing. The problem for Sony is that the damage has already been done, as the attorney for George Hotz, a defendant who has previously worked to unlock the iPhone, noted in a filing. GeoHot's lawyer responds to Sony "On the face of Sony's Motion, a [restraining order] serves no purpose in the present matter. The code necessary to 'jail break' the Sony Playstation computer is on the Internet. That cat is not going back in the bag," writes attorney Stewart Kellar. … [Read more...] about Can’t stop the signal: Sony’s options limited in face of PS3 jailbreak
Game Review: Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (PS3)
Focusing primarily on Ratchet, a furry creature who can perform acrobatics as well as he can wield ferocious weaponry, and occasionally his "death-bot" sidekick Clank, Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction employs a fairly simple combination of third-person platforming and shooting in a ratio of about 1:5. Ratchet is the last of a species called the Lombax, and the dastardly Percival Tachyon has set out to finally make the race extinct. The chase begins from the game's outset and takes the duo across a large array of varied planets, each with a particular theme and a number of challenges to overcome. The story is slightly juvenile, but no one goes into Ratchet and Clank expecting high-brow literature. The gameplay itself is straightforward and accessible. Moments without explosions and mayhem are fairly infrequent; you'll find yourself taking up arms against a seemingly unending horde of foes in almost every scene. This would grow tiresome were it not for the game's … [Read more...] about Game Review: Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (PS3)
