The Ultimate Guide to Body Language

We spend our lives learning how to decode other people's nonverbal cues. While we’re busy trying to decode their messages, they are also trying to decode ours. There are times when you want other people to know exactly how you’re feeling, especially when those feelings are both positive and reciprocated. This isn’t always easy to do, particularly if you’re not a very emotive type of person. At other times, however, you definitely want to hide your inner feelings. To avoid emotional leakage, you may have to work doubly hard. Depending on the situation, you may need to put on your Lady Gaga-style poker face. Body language is just that—the language of the body. You may think that you only show your emotions through your face, but that is only the tip of the iceberg. Your entire body participates in the business of either showing or hiding your mental state. To control that display means you have to control your body's cues. This guide will show you how, starting from the top down. … [Read more...] about The Ultimate Guide to Body Language

Black Tech Employees Rebel Against ‘Diversity Theater’

In each of the past seven years, major tech companies have released diversity reports, charting the number of women and people of color they employ. The numbers are reported to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, but companies have dedicated more and more resources to publicly displaying their commitments to diversity. The displays are impressive. The results are not. These companies spend millions on targeted outreach and strategic partnerships, but the results change little from year to year. Between 2014 and 2020, for example, the share of Black and Latinx tech workers at Facebook each increased by less than 2 percentage points. It seemed the same story year after year. Until 2020. The nationwide reckoning on race and racism last year exposed what many tasked with diversity work have privately discussed for years: that Silicon Valley’s own diversity and recruitment structures can hinder the work of opening doors to new people from different backgrounds with new … [Read more...] about Black Tech Employees Rebel Against ‘Diversity Theater’

Parents, put your phones down and hang out with your kids

Today marks New Zealand Children’s Day – a time to celebrate our tamariki and recognise the importance and needs of children in society. Save the Children Advocacy and Research Director Jacqui Southey asks parents to put their phones down and hang out with their kids. OPINION: A long-lost friend has just updated her profile pic, there’s a sale from your favourite brand, the latest app or Netflix season has just come out; our everyday world is saturated with digital updates and notifications to our phone or tablet every second of the day. But while there are many benefits to be gained from our digital world, there are also trade-offs. We’ve all heard about the need to limit device use and screen time for our children, from the very young through to teenagers. But what about us – the adults, parents, grandparents? Where are the suggested guidelines for screen time, and what impact does our time lived in the digital world have on our tamariki? Young children are closely … [Read more...] about Parents, put your phones down and hang out with your kids

Westerners leave mark on Ayutthaya

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai looks at samurai armour at a museum in the Japanese settlement in Ayutthaya. Deer skin was among export goods used as a cushion in samurai armour. Westerners were prominent in Ayutthaya, the former capital of the kingdom of Siam, in centuries past. They left historical records, architecture, language and cultural links of their contact with Iudea, as it was known at the time. Today they help us understand the area's history and Thailand's policies on international relations. "Ayutthaya is a multicultural society but there were clear conditions in the use of land. Churches could be set up but permission was needed, trading was allowed but had to be done via a system under the Treasury Department," said Assoc Prof Predee Phisphumvidhi, deputy dean of Mahidol University's Faculty of Liberal Arts. Foreign community settlement and access by foreign ships was limited to the south of the Ayutthaya city island with Pom Phet … [Read more...] about Westerners leave mark on Ayutthaya
