INDONESIA & MALAYSIA: Flung off their motorcycle, Amirah could only watch as her parents blew themselves up. The eight-year-old, who was with her mother and father as they rode up to a checkpoint outside Surabaya’s police headquarters, was the sole survivor of an ISIS-inspired suicide bombing in May 2018. Just the day before, another family of suicide bombers - including nine- and 12-year-old girls whose parents had strapped explosive vests to - attacked three churches. A third family planning attacks involving their four children, aged 10 to 17, were confronted by police at their home. Amirah (not her real name), along with other child survivors from these families, is now being treated at a Jakarta safe house. There, they’re being cared for by psychologists like Ms Sustri Saragih, who deals with the children of suicide bombers or minors directly involved in terror plots. “They have been highly exposed to violent extremism,” she said, remembering what it was like … [Read more...] about Child suicide bombers, and the shelter rehabilitating them in Indonesia

Indonesia jailbreak: Convicts return to Papua prison
SORONG, Indonesia: More than 270 inmates - including convicted murderers - who bolted from a prison torched during violent riots in Indonesia's Papua region have returned to finish their sentences, a corrections official said Friday (Aug 23). The convicts are even helping build a temporary office for their jailers, he added, after parts of the building in Sorong city went up in flames this week. About half the prison's 500 inmates fled Monday as protesters outside set the jail and other buildings ablaze. "But they weren't trying to escape - they just wanted to save themselves from the fire," prison spokesperson Elly Yuzar said Friday. "They also worried about their families ... Even convicted murderers have come back voluntarily," he added, without elaborating. The riots and demonstrations in the restive region were triggered by the weekend arrest of dozens of Papuan students in Indonesia's second-biggest city Surabaya, where they were also targeted with racial abuse. … [Read more...] about Indonesia jailbreak: Convicts return to Papua prison
Commentary: Lion Air crash raises uncomfortable questions about Indonesia’s flight safety regime
SINGAPORE: The tragic crash of Lion Air JT610 has shocked travel industry stakeholders - from travellers and airlines to aircraft manufacturers and regulators. For travel agencies, corporate travel managers and individual travellers, it raises anew concerns about Indonesia’s aircraft safety regime, notwithstanding optimism that recent efforts had successfully addressed problems that led jurisdictions like the European Union previously to ban Indonesia-based airlines. AIRCRAFT AGE VS AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE CULTURE Maintenance-related aircraft incidents are often associated with older aircraft, and Internet resources allow passengers and travel safety consultants to assess the age of most airlines’ fleets and even the aircraft that will fly a specific flight. However, airlines often make last-minute changes to the aircraft that will service a flight, which deprives passengers the ability to assess the age and specific history of an aircraft. Nevertheless, in this case, … [Read more...] about Commentary: Lion Air crash raises uncomfortable questions about Indonesia’s flight safety regime
Lion Air crash is the ‘risk of transportation’: Indonesia’s transport safety committee
JAKARTA: Accidents like the deadly crash of Lion Air flight JT610 are a "risk of transportation", said Indonesia's body charged with investigating transport safety deficiencies , a day after another mass-casualty aviation disaster in the country. "Where there is transportation, there will be accidents. Everywhere it's like that," said Mr Haryo Satmiko, deputy chairman of the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT). "This accident is sad and we are always working and hope that it will not happen again. Accidents are a risk of transportation." He was responding to questions from reporters over the damage another deadly accident involving a local operator would do to Indonesia's aviation safety reputation. There are currently no reports of any survivors from the crash of JT610, which had 189 passengers and crew on board. It comes less than four years after AirAsia flight QZ8501 crashed, also resulting in the deaths all of those on board, as well as … [Read more...] about Lion Air crash is the ‘risk of transportation’: Indonesia’s transport safety committee
Indonesia’s president to decide whether ore export ban to be brought forward
JAKARTA: Indonesia's President Joko Widodo will make the final decision on whether the country brings forward an export ban on mineral ore, the minister in charge of mining said on Tuesday (Aug 13). The ban is currently due to come into force in 2022. "The president's decision is expected sometime in the future," Luhut Pandjaitan, coordinating minister for maritime affairs and responsible for the mining ministry, told reporters on Tuesday. "We are awaiting the president's order." Pandjaitan favours bringing forward the ban from 2022 as it is aimed at attracting investment into the smelting industry. "In the current trade war condition, we need to attract as many investors as possible," he told reporters. Earlier on Tuesday, Pandjaitan said the revision to the mineral export rule is currently being drafted. Pandjaitan declined to specify whether the timetable will be changed for all exports of ore and concentrates or only for certain ores, such as nickel, which is mostly … [Read more...] about Indonesia’s president to decide whether ore export ban to be brought forward
Trump Jr touts ‘dream’ Indonesia projects, denies any conflicts
JAKARTA: Donald Trump Jr, the eldest son of the US president, said he was upbeat about two planned Trump-branded projects in Indonesia and dismissed any risk of conflict of interest over involvement in the luxury resorts in Southeast Asia's biggest economy. The executive vice president of the Trump Organisation, which is partnering with Indonesia's MNC Group run by billionaire Hary Tanoesoedibjo on the projects, made the comments at a pre-launch event in Jakarta on Tuesday (Aug 13). The visit comes amid rising trade tensions between the countries, with Indonesian officials worried about potential US tariffs being applied as the Southeast Asian nation had an US$8.3 billion trade surplus in 2018. "I'm very excited to be here, to see these very different projects," said Trump Jr, referring to the two resorts located on the popular holiday island of Bali and in Lido, near the heavily populated capital Jakarta. "Property is about location, location, location," he said, describing … [Read more...] about Trump Jr touts ‘dream’ Indonesia projects, denies any conflicts
