Maran man slips on bridge, falls to his death

KUANTAN (Bernama): A man died after slipping and falling in the area of a collapsed bridge leading from Jalan Belimbing to Jalan Sri Makmur in Maran, about 82km from here, after sending groceries to his friend Sunday (Jan 10) night. Maran OCPD Deputy Supt Norzamri Abd Rahman said the victim, Ng Eng Fui, 47, was believed to have fallen at around 10.30 pm while inspecting repair work done by Public Works Department (JKR) employees at the bridge. "Part of the bridge structure collapsed, believed to be due to the strong current from the floods on Jan 3 and warning signage had been installed at the scene. "The victim allegedly wanted to walk on the bridge at his own risk, even though it was not allowed," DSP Norzamri said Monday (Jan 11). DSP Norzamri said initial investigations found that the victim's head had hit iron or concrete from the bridge after it fell 5m and the victim was motionless when JKR workers tried to rescue him. The victim's body was taken to the Jengka Hospital … [Read more...] about Maran man slips on bridge, falls to his death

Bridging the Gap Between Science and Poor Reading in America

For nearly two decades, there has been a huge gap between the science of reading and instructional practices in America’s classrooms. Reading scientists such as Mark Seidenberg, a researcher in cognitive psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, correctly attributes the problem to the failure of educators to pay attention to reading science (Seidenberg, 2017). With two decades of groundbreaking research in cognitive psychology and neuroscience and an explosion of new understandings about the architecture of the reading brain and how children learn to read, how is it that two-thirds of American fourth and eighth graders still read below grade level proficiency? The answer harkens back to scientifically debunked practices indelibly planted more than three decades ago by the whole language movement. I was part of that movement, so I take the liberty to write about it! These same misunderstandings in reading education can also be traced back to the National Reading Panel … [Read more...] about Bridging the Gap Between Science and Poor Reading in America

Bridging the distance

English playwright William Shakespeare once wrote that “parting is such sweet sorrow” that it leads someone to look forward to seeing the other again. This perfectly describes seafaring couples during that small, quiet moment at the airport where one turns his back and walks away while the other looks on until a crowd of travelers close in on that speck of the luggage-loaded man. Seafaring is a lucrative profession, indeed, but it can be tough on families, more so for couples. Studies show that loneliness and homesickness are among the most debilitating and damaging psychological problems among seafarers, usually caused by long periods of being away from home. The toll is such that even Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet may struggle with the length of time apart. As for Arnel and Noemi Alvaran’s case, keeping the spark in each other’s eyes is a product of a conscious and a seemingly lifelong commitment to courting. “Constant communication plays an important role in any … [Read more...] about Bridging the distance

Video Player Close NAIROBI, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Anne Maluki drew inspiration from positive femininity displayed by her mother while growing up in the south-eastern Kenyan county of Kitui at a time when career dreams of many girls crashed due to limitations set by patriarchy. The 33-year-old business administration major was determined at a tender age to prove her mettle in school with a realization that quality education could open a floodgate of opportunities in her adult life. Maluki's stellar performance at a private university in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, secured her white-collar jobs with local companies at a relatively young age. She is currently a manager at the Aftersales Service and Business Hall Departments in the Chinese pay television firm, StarTimes, where she has worked for the last eight years. "I oversee both departments and ensure smooth day-to-day operations," Maluki said during an interview in Nairobi ahead of International Women's Day to be marked … [Read more...] about Feature: Chinese pay TV firm creates platform for Kenyan women in workforce to thrive
